Here and There j on the Turf Discovery Is Crack Sprinter j But Nobody Knows It Aga Khans Horses Continue to J Rule j ;; Coldstream May Go in Subur- j 1 ban Discovery is due to start Saturday in a six furlongs dash, at Belmont Park after having been inactive since the Santa Anita Handicap. His return to the wars hasnt been publicized very much, which has been satisfactory to Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and J. H. Stotler and the five-year-old son of Display and Ariadne, to all intent and purpose, will be just another horse when he goes to the post. But after Discovery runs and wins, if he does that, his name will appear in print more often as he will be pointed for engagements which carry more money and more importance. There are certain aspects of Discoverys appearance in a six furlongs dash, however, that are worthy of thought. The Vanderbilt star never has been considered as a sprinter but the writer hazards the opinion that Discovery is unbeatable at six furlongs under scale weight, Sation not to the contrary. The pair may never meet under thpse circumstances because the Vanderbilt horse will find more money in events of longer distances. Last spring Discovery had an opportunity io show what he could do at sprinting in the Toboggan Handicap but he failed to run to expectations as his stablemate," Identify, emerged victorious. In fact, the big chestnut did not find his stride until he had raced several more times. Stotler is hopeful Discovery will start off his summer campaign with the. sort of effort of. which he is capable and" if he does. Belmont Parks spectators will see a fancy brand of sprinting. Discovery is gifted with a brilliant turn of speed, so much that there is hardly a horse in the country that can keep up with him if he is called upon to level in the early furlongs. His position is something like that of Man o Wars when the Glen Riddle marvel was racing in 1920. He wasnt called upon to race six furlongs as a three-year-old yet practically every horseman who saw him race had the opinion that no sprinter ever appeared in this country that could beat him over a short distance. Aga Khans power in English racing continues with his Mahmoud and Taj Akbar finishing first and second in the English Derby. A year ago Bahram carried his colors to victory in the historic classic and in 1930 Blenheim, the sire of Mahmoud, gave the Indian Prince his first triumph in the event. Without exception during the past seven years, horses from the Aga Khans stable have proven prominent in the out- Continued on fourth page. No American owner, unless it was the late Harry Payne Whitney, ever met with more success over a period of years with his horses than the fabulously wealthly potentate. There have been instances in which one stable was dominant in a single season such as Vanderbilt last year, Brookmeade the year before and in previous years Whitney and Rancocas. Disappointing to Americans was the failure of Boswell, but William Woodward will keep on trying to vin the English Derby and he has the notion that one of his two-year-olds will develop into a first rate candidate next spring. Granville may not be the only three-year-old starting in the Suburban Handicap Saturday as Coldstreams mile and a quarter workout in 2:08 yesterday morning indicates that Alex Gordon is considering Chas. B. Shaf f ers . colt for the race. Coldstream raced disappointingly in the Withers, but Gordon ever has been a person to keep on trying. If the son of Bull Dog shows a creditable performance in the Suburban he can be expected to fulfill his engagement in the Belmont Stakes the ensuing Saturday. John B. Campbell has assigned the Shaffer three-year-old 106 pounds in the handicap and this is two pounds below scale weight and the impost to be carried by Granville. Firethorn, which has not shown anything like his best form this season, also may be included among the Suburban candidates because of his trial over the full distance in 2:09. The race now is shaping up as most attractive. With Knight Gallant being reserved for later engagements, Glen Riddles War Admiral may be considered the outstanding candidate for the National Stallion Stakes of those which have been in competition at Belmont Park. The son of Man 0 War ana Brushup has won both his starts this season, the latter down the Belmont chute being accomplished with the utmost ease. Man o Wars get havent been as successful in recent years as they were when Crusader, American Flag, Scapa Flow, Edith Cavell and others of his sons and daughters were winning important stakes but they may be on their way to duplicate the fame of that coterie of stars. Whatever success the Man o War youngsters have during the summer will, influence the sale df his yearlings at Saratoga in August as Samuel D. Riddle has decided to offer his entire crop of young stock this year. War Admiral is bred very much like War Glory, which won the Dwyer, Kenner, Lawrence Realization and Maryland Handicap in 1933, both being by Man o War while War Admirals dam, Brushup, is a half sister to War Glory.
