BEN JACOBS NEAR DEATH DETROIT, Mich., May 27. The condition of Benjamin Jacobs, veteran racing official, who serves as paddock judge here, took a! turn for the worse today and his attending j physician entertains little hope for his re-! covery. A native of Detroit, Jacobs first attracted nationwide attention when; as agent for Jerome B. Respcss he selected the six mounts for Jimmy Lee when that negro rider swept the card at Churchill Downs. He served under the late John Dillon at Latonia and until the Detroit Racing Association was organized he was an official on the Orpen circuit in Canada. He left the employ of Orpcn to become paddock judge here. i
