FINALE AT WOODBINE PARK Tempestuous Takes Ontario Jockey Club Cup Greatorex Victor in Hendrie Steeplechase. TORONTO, Ont, Oct. 3. Tempestuous, carrying the silks of Mrs. T. Stevenson, whirled to a one-length victory in the twenty-eighth running of the Ontario Jockey Club Cup Handicap, featured offering on the closing day card at Woodbine Park. The son of Sickle and Equinoctial, under 109 pounds, administered defeat to H. C. Hatchs Sweep-staff by one length, with third going to J. C. Palmers Rosselli, which raced coupled in the wagering with the winner. Cosgrave Stables Jack Patches was fourth after setting the early pace, and C. Smythes Shoeless Joe brought up the rear of the field. Jockey C. McTague rode the winner. In accomplishing his victory Tempestuous smashed the track record for the nine furlongs when he drove to the finish in 1:51, clipping one-fifth of a second from the mark set by Spot Cash in 1923. The fractional time of the race was :23, :47, 1:12 and 1:38. The start was a good one with Shoeless Joe and Jack Patches having the most speed from the barrier. Jack Patches, beginning from the outside of the stalls, immediately swung to the rail and took command, racing before Shoeless Joe as the leaders swung into the backstretch. Sweepstaff was next In line before Tempestuous while Rosselli trailed the field four lengths out of It. This order was maintained until the field swung into the -homestretch, when Sweep-staff responded kindly to urging and drew abreast of Jack Patches, while Shoeless Joe tired. The advantage held by Sweep-staff was short lived, however, for Tempestuous came to the outside of the leaders and, finishing very fast, dislodged Sweeps-staff from the lead in the final fifty yards. STALLS OFF CHALLENGE. Sweepstaff, top weight of the field, continued gamely when headed and was able to stall off the belated challenge of Rosselli, which finished fastest of all to outgame Jack Patches for the show award. Tempestuous earned ,570 by his victory. Greatorex, racing for the Toronto sportsman H. R. Bain, was returned the easiest kind of winner of the twenty-fourth running of the Hendrie Steeplechase, three-mile feature for jumpers. Duplicating his winning performance in the Woodbine Autumn Steeplechase on the opening day of the meeting, the gray son of Stefan the Great led throughout to canter across the finish line thirty lengths before his nearest rival, Wilfrid G. Forty lengths farther back Celeritas took third, and Fair Diana was another twenty lengths away. The only other starter, Pekisko, lost her rider at the sixth fence. Duplicating the success of Gay Sympathy in 1935, Samoan took major honors in the Breeders Stakes for E. F. Seagram. The race, which was the secondary feature and carried a value of ,220 to the winner, was for Canadian-bred three-year-olds and was at the mile and a sixteenth distance. Sa-moans success was accomplished in the same easy manner In which he captured the Stanley Stakes last Monday and eight lengths elapsed before Spearman was second. .Trainer Frank Gilpin and jockey McTague shared honors on the days program for Gilpin trained Tempestuous, winner of the Ontario Jockey Club Handicap and Dixie Dora, which won the second race, as well as Samoan. McTague was astride all three winners.
