HOWARD BY A NOSE Completes Double for Jockey Knott in Winning Mt. Washington. Cyclonic Charge in Final Sixteenth Brings Unexpected Triumph Over Gallant Gay. SALEM, N. H., Oct. 3 Steve Panarellaj Howard, surprise winner of the What Cheer Handicap, back at Narragansett Park, won his second stake since being claimed from the Araho Stable, when he drove to victory by a nose in the Mt Washington Handicap, which featured todays sport at Rockingham Park. The winner, ridden by Ken Knott who was completing a double, swept up in the stretch to defeat Weston Adams Gallant Gay. The latter appeared like the winner at the sixteenth pole, but could not withstand Howards cyclonic charge in the final yards. At the end of the journey, Mrs. L. H. Nimkoffs Beefsteak was third, and Childs and Walkers Watersplash, which ran a much improved race, finished two lengths back of the third horse. Beefsteak set the pace to the far turn, where Howell called upon Gallant Gay and met a ready response. His mount went to the lead as they rounded the bend and drew out slightly as they straightened away for the drive home. He was showing on top and going in handy fashion right up to the sixteenth ground, when Howard began his charge on the outside. Knott drove with everything at his command, showed in front just as they flashed by the seventy yard marker and lasted it out Gallant Gay was game to the end, but was conceding the field weight on the scale under 113, and could not quite last it out Moun-tainy Man, an unruly post horse, broke into Accolade at the start and knocked him. out of it Beefsteak was tiring at the end after making the pace. GOOD BETTING CROWD. The weather was warm and sunny and the crowd numbered close to 10,000. It was a throng which bet much more heavily than the patrons did In the first days of the session. Mrs." William Hodsons High Finance -closed with a whirlwind rush in the final six-, teenth under an energetic drive from Wally LeisViman to win the opening event at five and a half furlongs. At the end the Wrack gelding was a neck clear of C. Murrays Irish Hero, who had-only a head to spare over Miss Mary .Whites Lottafun. Phrixu3 finished fourth in the field of a dozen. The winner was rated back of the pace of Edri for a half mile, made his move on the turn and was driven hard in the, final sixteenth to get up. Irish Hero was well back of the pace in the early running and worked his way up gradually to take the place. Lottafun wa3 out in all the pace fight, and took the lead briefly at the far turn, but could not retain it when the winner challenged. CHERRY CAN FIRST. Mrs. Ray Pollards Cherry Can, under a hard drive from "Red" Howell, came charging up in the final sixteenth to win the second at six furlongs. At the end he was a neck in advance of Osmuck, with the early pacemaker, J. Stewart Johnstons Hi-Sugar third. It was an extremely tight fit for the place, Hi-Sugar finishing just a nose back of the runner-up. Dlxianas My Goodness was fourth. Mrs. E. A. Rotellis Blandishment, an extreme outsider at better than 40 to 1, won the third heat and completed a "Daily Double" that paid 54.70. The winner came from nowhere to get the decision by half a length over Mrs. F. Williams General A. Col. E. P. Bixers Match Play was third and Lady Hockberger fourth. Sun Teatime set the. early pace but tired when Lady Hockberger challenged for the lead at the far turn. The latter led into the stretch but went back in the drive and Blandishment, under a stout drive from Knott, drove up to take it all in the final sixteenth. BY WIDE MARGIN. T. F. Swords Vote Boy, out in all the pace fight, came again in the stretch to win the six furlongs event that was fourth on the program. Stonewall Jackson driving him home half a length in front of Col. W. A. Jones Furfiber. Leo J. Marks Marmara finished third, a head back of the runner up. Vote Boy broke fast and took the lead at the half mile pole, and held it to the end although Jackson was forced to a hard drive to stave off the challenge of Furfiber and Marmara. Oaktree Stables Lady Bewithus drove to a narrow score in the six furlongs Maple-wood Handicap, which was the secondary feature on the card. At the end she was a nose clear of the heavily-backed Jewell Dorsett, from the Lone Star Stable. Tommy Malley had the second horse on the front end as they entered the stretch, but failed to go to the whip when the winner challenged .at the sixteenth post, and that may have lost the race for him. Tobe Trotters Enfin was going fast at the finish to be third.
