Fompoon Outstanding Juvenile Star Discovery Still Rated Foremost of Handicap Division. y - I Granville, 1st Pompoon, 2nd Discovery, 3rd Granville is Americas champion of 1936. The unfortunate son of Gal- lant Fox, owned by William Woodward, New York banker and chairman of The Jockey Club, has been designated "best horse of the year" by a committee of Daily Racing Form experts, whose selections of the best two- and three-year-olds and handicap horses of the year are shown below. The big bay colt was not, however, unanimously chosen as "best of the year." Pompoon, brilliant son of Pompey, whose sensational late-season form and worlds record in the Futurity gained him legions of admirers, received many votes for that honor and in addition was the only unanimous choice of the experts, receiving every vote cast for campion juvenile of the year. Gran ville was voted the leader among the three-year-olds and Discovery Jiad a majority in the balloting on the best handicap horse of the season now on the wane. The summary shows Granville best of all ages, Pompoon juvenile champion and Discovery, king of the handicap division. - REAL TOUGH LUCK. Calling Granville "unfortunate" in view of the fact that his record was so brilliant and in the face of his selection as champion o! all ages in 1936, is paradoxical, but a resume of his three-year-old career indicates that he was unfortunate in not finishing the season unbeaten except for his Kentucky Derby effort, in which he never had a chance. He lost his rider immediately after the clang of the bell starting the coveted Blue Grass fixture. In the Suburban Handicap, in the Preakness Stakes and in the Wood Memorial, he had "nose trouble," losing those fa mous races by the slimmest of margins, measureable by inches. All of them were photographic finishes, the negatives in every case giving Bold Venture, Firethorn and Teufcl decisions over the Belair Stud color-bearer. Granvilles three-year-old career began In auspicious fashion. He won a purse race on April 21, at Jamaica, in which he defeated Ned Rcigh and Pullman. That was the last time fortune smiled on his efforts until June-2G, when he won tho Belmont Stakes. It was in the Saratoga Cup that Granville really put the seal on his claim to greatness. In! that race he met Discovery at scale weight over one mile and three-quarters and conclusively and decisively defeated the recognized king of the handicap division. His winning margin was eight lengths, his riders Idea of a good winning margin. It could have been much more. Bold Venture, Morton L. Schwartz rangy chestnut son of St. Germans, was even more unlucky than Granville. After his surprising victory in the. Kentucky Derby, he came right back in the Prcakness Stakes to make it two straight victories over the Belair Stud champion. Prior to the Derby he had won a purse race, but after the Preakness he went wrong and was put away for the year unbeaten and winner of three races. He may have been a better horse than Granville, merely supposition in view of the fact that two races do not constitute a season and Granville improved as the season progressed. The Schwartz colt was therefore considered second only to Granville with Brevity third on the list. Rushaway, Sun Teddy, High Fleet, Mr. Bones and Hollyrood had their admirers but the best any of them received was a vote for third place to Gran ville and Bold Venture. OUTSTANDING JUVENILE. Pompoon, Granvilles chief rival for premier honors, apparently is esteemed by experts to be the most outstanding juvenile to appear in American racing since the days of brilliant filly Top Flight, which was not beaten at two. Pompoon won the National Stallion, Junior Champion and Futurity Stakes and it was following the last named race that experts and public alike joined in hailing him as a champion. He was beaten only once, by No Sir in a handicap at Saratoga in which he carried 130 pounds and conceded much weight to his rivals, finishing in second place. He won three purse races in addition to his three stake victories and has earned 8,420 this year. He is owned by J. H. Louchhcim, one of the most enthusiastic turfmen in this country, and should he add the New England Futurity to his victories, may finish the year as the leading American money winning horse. War Admiral, Maedic, Case Ace, Privileged and Bottle Cap were Pompoons chief rivals. War Admiral being considered second only to the Louchheim star and Case Ace and Maedic almost tied in the voting for third choice. DISCOVERYS TRIUMPHS. Discovery, almost weighted out of handicaps by racing secretaries and handicappcrs, headed the handicap division by a big margin and while he was defeated often, always had the excuse of too much weight except on one or two occasions, the most notable the Saratoga Cup in which Granville defeated him easily. His triumphs included the San Carlos, Brooklyn, and Saratoga Handicaps, Wilson and Whitney Stakes. He won the Brooklyn Handicap for the third consecutive year, ditto the Whitney Stakes and took the Wilson Stakes for the second straight year. Top Row received a few votes over Discovery as the leader of the handicap division and there is no gainsaying the midget son of Peanuts a place in the sun among the great and near great. Every inch of the mighty little Baroni star is all race horse and his ability to survive roughly-run races, specifically the 00,000 Santa Anita Handicap, which he won, was not among the least of his virtues. Time Supply is third on the list of older stars and the voting was almost unanimously Discovery, Top Row and Time Supply. Summing up the opinion of the experts into a consensus, the rating among and of all ages is Granville, Pompoon and Discovery in that order. Myrtlewood was the champion sprinter and Bushranger the acknowledged leader of the steeplechase horses. Both earned their titles in competition.
