FAIR KNSGHTESS FIRST Noses Out Dark Hope in Thrilling Renewal of Laurel Handicap. Roman Soldier Annexes Show Award Triple Action Surprises in Maryland Futurity. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 17. In one of .the best finishes ever to occur in the Laurel Handicap, Fair Knightcss, sterling three-year-old daughter of Bright Knight and Fair Phantom, which races for H. C. McGohce, Vlr-"inla turfman, was returned winner of the twenty-third running of that important ail-ago special that topped the triple feature in the Saturday program at Laurel today. Opposed by four other older performers and racing over a strip ankle deep in mud from rains that obtained over night and until shortly before race time, the McGchec filly earned her achievement after a bitterly fought duel with J. W. Y. In the run to the first turn three of the members were abreast with Fair Knightess , on the outside of Roman Soldier and Billy Bee, to take command going into the back stretch. Down the far side of the course, little more than a length separated the first three, while Silent Shot barely headed Dark Hope, which picked up some lost ground by going carefully around the curve. Fair Knightess was showing a fondness for the muddy footing, and she was setting rather stiff pace when she went to the half mile mark in :47?s, and the three-quarters in 1:13. Billy Bee was ofrcing the pace, and it was-a bit too stiff for Roman Soldier, the Sachsenmaier colt dropping back to last place before leaving the back stretch. With the long run completed on the far side, Dark Hope went into contention on the turn and, in a short space, reached the flanks of Fair Knightess. The McGehee filly, however, was not through by any means, and in bulldog fashion, waged a spectacular finish, to be awarded by a nose decision. The camera was called on to confirm the finish, and it agreed with the call of the chartmaker. The time for the distance was 1:3914. MARYLANDS JUVENILE LEADER. Triple Action, fleet-footed two-year-old son of Canter Black Momma which races for J. W. Y. Martiir of Worthington Valley, became the leader of the year among Maryland-bred two-year-olds when he- made a show of ten other youngsters to account for the sixth running of the Maryland Futurity, a dash of six furlongs that was the first of the twin features. A winner on two other occasions this season in eight starts, his reward of ,970 enriched his owners coffers to the extent of ,645 when he drove to the finish two and one-half lengths before The Schemer, which raced coupled with Savage Beauty as the Branncastle Farm entry, while, beaten a nose, Rough Time led the others for J. Y. Christmas. The Futurity was fourth on the card and, from a good start, Gay Balko and Rough Time went away on even terms to furnish the pace, with Irrepressible, a running mate to Gay Balko, in third position and Fleeting Moon fourth before the others, of which Triple Action was sixth and just in advance of Boulevard, the third part of the Vander-bilt starters. Gay Balko and Rough Time were able to draw clear as they teamed for the leadership, but it was apparent they would be menaced when the real racing began. Coming into the stretch both held their positions, but Triple Action had moved into contention and, unleashing a bold rush, overhauled the two at the furlongpost. Kept under vigorous urging by J. OMalley, Triple Action asserted his superiority to prevail at the will of his rider approaching the finish. BLIND BROOK SCORES. L. E. Ogle furnished the winner of the opening race a gallop of one mile and one-sixteenth when his veteran plater Blind Brook defeated E. Kanes Portden, Yenrac from the A? Frost barn and two-others in a field of five. Favored. by the underfooting and going along in third position while Yenrac and Portden led the way until reaching the home stretch the I E. Ogle plater racing on the outside of the pair unleashed his winning run when straightened into the front lane and with L. Balaski in the saddle came to the close to maintain a length and one-half margin. In the battle for second Portden was out two. lengths before the tiring Yenrac, while Minton was far back and holding a comfortable gap over Drastic . Delight. j A big surprise came with the running of the claiming steeplechase that was the second on the card, and decided at two miles, when Golden Reel making his first appearance in that branch of sport, carried the silks of Montpelier to a driving triumph. The graduation of the Golden Guinea Aurelia three-year-old was accomplished by a length and one-half, when he came to the end of the contest before Gwladys Whitneys Rideaway, with Hurry Harry barely lasting to capture third from Spinach. The only other starter was Martinious and he was far back as he completed the route. Another upset marked the third event on the program and it ran the successes of winning outsiders to three in as many numbers when Morning, from the Mrs. R. A. Van Clief stable took down major honors in the mile test that was fashioned for two-year-olds. In this, a field of seven were engaged and it found Ocean Roll the heavily backed favorite in second place at the close of eight furlongs, while Mrs. E. Denemarks Uneasy took third over the four others that were led by Siam. Morning was ridden by jockey R. Root who t lost his apprentice allowance in the seventh race Friday and she made her presence felt early in the running when she dashed along back of the favorite, which was rushed out by H. Le Blanc to show the way. Under slight reserve for the first six furlongs, Morning engaged Ocean Roll midway of the final turn while the pair was out well before the others and in a game finish drove on by in the final sixteenth to win by one length at the end. Ocean Roll was five lengths before Uneasy as he battled along with the filly, while the latter had a safe margin over Siam. The winning streak of four consecutive victories, compiled by E. Kanes Moon Side since beginning his Maryland campaign, came to a halt in the Bowling Brook Handicap, third of the features, when he finished last in a five-horse field. This was a test of nine furlongs that held sixth place on the card. In this a nose finish obtained between three of the five starters, and Corinto was acknowledged the winner after inspection of the camera film, when he came to the close in the hectic duel to beat Maemere Farms Maericl, and Floradora. The fighting leaders were three lengths before Must Be, while Moon Side was an additional two lengths away. Litzenberger, before the numbers were displayed, lodged a claim of foul, but it had no effect on the result as taken from Ithe camera
