MUCHO GUSTO IN FORM 1 Makes Amends for Recent Defeat by . t Winning East Hills Handicap. 0 Tires Near Finish but Long Early t Lead Proves Sufficient to De- r c feat Safe and Sound. i s 1 CINCINNATI, Ohio, Oct. 17. Mucho Gusto, double stakes winner during the Lincoln j Fields season, made amends for Mis disappointing effort in the Western Hill Hand- 1 a leap here recently when he was a handy and j popular victor in the East Hills Handicap, t main event on an attractive program which i was offered under inclement weather and adverse track conditions before one of the I largest crowds of the meeting at River Downs this afternoon. H. W. and W. J. Youngs Safe and Sound was second, a length and one-half back of the winner and a length J before Mrs. C. S. Howards Seabiscuit, top j weight, under 116 pounds, which led Best 1 Bid, a stablemate of Safe and Sound, by ! two and one-half lengths for minor honors. 1 Paradisical was fifth, with Professor Paul 1 the trailer at the end. HIGH ORDER OF SPEED. Displaying his customary high flight of early speed and under the guidance of the veteran Harry Louman, Mucho Gusto sprinted into a good lead during the run ! to the back stretch. He increased his ad- ; vantage steadily over Seabiscuit, which fol- lowed in closest pursuit during the run to the final quarter of the mile and a six- : teenth journey and, although tiring in the 1 last stages, he held Safe arid Sound safe. The latter charged down on the outside to ; subdue Seabiscuit, but was unable to menace the winner. Best Bid held fourth position the greater part of the running, but Para- ; distcal was done after five-sixteenths and : Professor Paul only made a mild threat as the field approached the final furlong. : Mucho Gusto earned ,045 of the ,500 added purse for Mrs. K. Ramsey and ran ; the distance in 1:56. Bernard F., home-bred son of Sun God II., . which won two stakes for I. J. Collins, Ohio sportsman, during the Detroit meeting, , scored his fifth triumph of the year and the first here, when he annexed the Gibson . Hotel Handicap, fourth event and first of . three handicaps offered. Benefited slightly by swerving to the inside during the final. . furlong of the three-quarters sprint, the j Collins juvenile reached the end a length before O. F. Woodwards Jadva, which led I , Dan Lehans Miss Bonnie by two and one- j j half lengths for second. Star Singer and Lac-Ha-Carolyn, the others of the small field of five under colors, finished in the named order. IN CLOSE QUARTERS. The speedy Jadva took command at once and raced into a clear lead during the run to the far turn. The winner was in-closest pursuit with Star Singer and Miss Bonnie well before Lac-Ha-Carolyn. Approaching the final quarter, Thornton drove Bernard F. up on the outside of the pacemaker and during the run through the stretch, he swerved to the inside and although he did not Impede Jadva he had her in close quar-tarsand.-she weakened -near the end. Miss Bonnie, "which reached third place rounding the far turn, held on well, but Star Singer and- Lac-Ha-Carolyn failed to menace the leaders. The winner provided the first popular score and negotiated the muddy going in 1:20. Showers, which fell the greater part of the night and until late in the morning, left the track a quagmire and as to be expected there were many surprises. The return of the "Daily Double" combination was the largest of the meeting and a new high mutuel price was paid on Mohawk Cherokee when ho won the first race. Buddie Treacy made good at his first asking under C. N. Finchs colors when he turned back Boston Mary, Zevson, Silas, Dora May and Reminiscent in the Sinton Hotel Handicap, fifth event and at six furlongs. Well handled by Porter Roberts and saved while Dora May and Boston Mary were battling for the leadership, the winner drove down on the outside of Boston Mary during the run through the stretch and, despite being forced wide, came on to lead the latter by a half length at the end. Zevson, which raced on the inside in the stretch, closed fast, but Reminiscent showed nothing to merit his strong support. After relinquishing the lead Dora May quit badly, and Silas only made up ground in the final furlong. PAYS 7.80 FOR . Returning 7.80 for each straight, and the biggest surprise of the meeting, Mohawk Cherokee, a four-year-old gelded son of Cherokee and Keep Sake, carried W. J. Sprows colors to his first success in the three-quarters first race, for which Tarpon was a heavily-supported choice. Rolanda was second and Gamaliel, which was unprepared at the start, third. Under Willie Hanka and forced to lose ground while he was subduing Tarpon, the winner rapidly established a big advantage, and the finish found him three lengths before Rolanda, which held on in fine style. Gamaliel closed on the inside in the drive and Tarpon quit badly after relinquishing the lead. Snoops, one of the choices, showed little. Willie Hanka was astride his second winner when Mat Jordans Mystic Sign was i winner of the third race. Courtney s i easy an Pet raced to second place, with Morris R. , third. Brophy, a heavily supported choice, finished seventh after showing nothing to support. Campagna, the second his merit uIiL trailed the pack of nine at the end.
