CARLOVINIANS GREAT EFFORT Drives to Sensational Victory After Appearing Hopelessly Beaten. Gets Up In Last Fifty Yards to Be Length In Front at the Finish Nad and Rain-land Account for Minor Parts of Purse. CORAL GABLES, Fla., March 31. Car-Iovinian, flashing son of Grand Ace and Gay Kitty, racing for Mrs. W. T. Anderson, returned to his best form with a brilliant performance to account for the Buccaneer Purse, a dash of six furlongs fashioned for the better grade three-year-olds which served as the principal attraction at Tropical Park today. Opposed by six others of his age it marked the second triumph of the season for the useful sprinter when he came from a trailing position in the small field after appearing hopelessly beaten, to achieve his victory in a sensational drive. In this, Nad, with a greatly improved effort, raced into second position for T. D. Buhl after a shift in riders from A. Cooper to E. .Litzenberger, while third was the portion of the puse for Rainland, from the Shandon Farm, when he took the measure of Tonianna, Debate, Idle Midget and Daytonian the only othera under colors when the event was pruned down by the withdrawals of Pageboy and Yetive. RAINLAND FRACTIOUS. The Buccaneer Purse was fifth on the card and, after a short delay due to the frac-tiousness of Rainland, a good start was obtained, although both Carlovinian and Idle Midget stumbled at the break, which permitted Rainland to go into the lead and provide a brisk pace. C. Swain had the Crack Brigade colt in full stride immediately and he was sent out into a one-length lead. Idle Midget, after his costly misfortune at the break was rushed up stoutly by E. Steffen to force the pace, while Nad held to third place as the ultimate winner trailed in last position several lengths back of Daytonian, Rainland was still in the van position reach-" ing the home stretch, but Idle Midget had gone back and Nad was right at his flank and fighting along strongly. In the meantime, Carlovinian had reached his field and began circling on the outside to be with his opponents. Coming around rapidly the Mrs. W. T. Anderson colt closed in readily in hi3 belated charge and in the last fifty lards overhauled his company to reach the close with a length as his final margin. The race was run in 1:13 flat and the winners backers received 4 to 1. HEAVY SHOWERS. Heavy showers late Tuesday evening brought a change in track conditions for the mid-week sport, but fortunately the weather was of the best sort and a large crowd turned out to accept the entertainment. Amqui, from the Medway Stable, a heavily supported choice, started the talent off on the right foot when she turned in her initial triumph this year to capture honors in the six furlongs test for ordinary platers that was the first race. Ten were under colors, and it was Tiana, a rank outsider, which raced into second place, while third went to Bristle, another at liberal odds, when he led home Chance Queen and the six others. Jockey A. Schmidl accomplished a riding double when Mrs, K. Jesberger"s Day Dawn earned her second consecutive purse this week to defeat Sol; Rutchicks Twosome, W. N. Adrians Hornet and four other three-year-olds at the end of the six furlongs second race. Ruling the choice for the race, the daughter of Distraction moved along in second position lapped with Loyal Son as the A. C. Niehaus gelding established a quick pace, while Romney Royal, on the inside, showed the way to Twosome and the others. Never permitting Loyal Son to gain a second breath, the Jesberger filly surged to the front approaching the home stretch, then under nursing tactics while bearing out landed across the line with a length and one-half to spare. Twosome took the place by a neck, while Hornet overhauled the tiring Romney Royal to share third. WINNER FOR FLANAGAN J. F. Flanagan furnished the winner of tha third race, a dash of four furlongs for juveniles that was the first of two such events on the program, when Bestest graduated under the handling of W. D. Wright to triumph In a mild drive. Breaking swiftly from her inside position, the daughter of Boot to Boot dominated all of the running to sweep over the line a length and a half before Eastorian, from the I. J. Collins barn, while the favored Toolittle, after a rough trip, managed to drive into third place, beaten a similar margin. The maiden juvenile fillies that met for the second of the two-year-old tilts that was the fourth offering produced one of the best finishes witnessed at the present meeting, when no less than six of the eight starters came to the final line so closely locked that a blanket could have spanned them. After the photo was received and scanned for assurance of the outcome, winning honors fell to Mrs. W. E. Martins Dohoev, while Gracky, a first-time starter, landed in second place over Mrs. D. A. Buckleys Heraldic, which led the others, which included tho disappointing My Pauline.
