ILLINOIS VICTORY LIKELY State May Furnish Arkansas Derby Winner Second Year, Formidablo Array of Eligibles In ,000 Added Oaklawn Park Fixture Next Saturday. HOT SPRINGS, Ark., March 31. For the second consecutive year an Illinois victory in the ,000 added Arkansas Derby, scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Oaklawn Park, appears imminent. Last year when the stakes fixture was inaugurated H611 Image, carrying the silks of William E. Schmidt of Chicago, accounted for the rich prize and, again this season, owners from Illinois present a formidable array of representatives. Though eleven of the twenty-nine candidates named for the mile and a furlong test are the property of Illinois sportsmen, actual representation in the Derby is likely to be reduced to four starters when the three-year-olds are summoned to the post. With Leo Beydas Delta Dan, regarded as one of the "dark" horses in the fixture, definitely out due to a throat ailment which has prevented trainer Dick Watts from training the colt, the chief reliance of the Illinoisans will be W. C. Reicherts Sir Midas. PROSPECTIVE FAVORITES. In all probability this sturdy bay son of Golden Guinea Sweet Yvette will be installed the betting choice, irrespective of the opposition, as he has proved his ability to negotiate the route successfully and has performed in creditable fashion in New Orleans and Hot Springs. Sir Midas appears to be better suited by the mile and a furlong route than his rivals for the event, and it is likely that the bay colt will rule a pronounced favorite. Next to the Reichert hopeful, the gray colt from the stable of Chappel Brothers, Tetra-shera, looms most prominent of the Blinois eligibles for the stake. This son of Shcrab Chrysos has displayed flashes of good form, his best performance resulting in the Arlington Hotel Purse, in which he finished in third place. The Blue Ridge Farm stable, owned by Alderman William OToole of Chicago, has a pair of candidates in Mibs and Waterplay, the former being the strongest possibility of the two. Mrs. James Chesney, a resident of Belleville, 111., has Carl S. as her chief dependent in the most important contest of the Oaklawn Jockey Clubs meeting. TRAINING ACTIVITIES. Training activities showed an increase among the Derby candidates Wednesday morning when two of the eligibles were given a test over the full route of a mile and a furlong. Mrs. Chesneys Carl S. and F. H. Carpenters Overplay were timed in the following fractions: :23, :48, 1:14, 1:41 and 1:53. The pair worked together and Carl S. accomplished the test in handy fashion, while Overplay was driving to keep up with his work companion. Other trials included the Blue Ridge Farms Mibs, which accomplished a handy mile spin in 1:42. The chestnut daughter of Challenger II. went the opening quarter in :24, half mile in :48, three-quarters in 1:14, finishing out the mile in 1:42, handly. Mrs. V. B. Hoppers Zor traveled a mile and a furlong in handy fashion in the following time: Half mile in :50, three-quarters in 1:16, mile in 1:44, and the Derby route in 1:57.
