1 I C. V. WHITNEY. DERBY CANDIDATES WORK OUT C. V. Whitneys Black Look and Flying Cross Well Advanced. Each Tlirec-Ycar-OId Accompanied by an Older Horso In Gallop at Lexington. LEXINGTON, Ky., March 31. Black Look and Flying Cross, the two Kentucky Derby candidates, of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney in training at the Whitney farm here under the direction of Thomas J. Healev. were given slow mile workouts yesterday but they are well advanced in their basic training and are ready for faster trials. Each of the two three-year-olds was accompanied by an older horse. Black Look worked with Roustabout, ridden by "Sonny" Workman, while the latter also had the mount on Flying Cross, with Nertney on Tatterdemalion. Black Look and Roustabout were timed in 1:46, both being under strong restraint. Thev were timed the quarter In :2G, half in :52, and three-quarters in 1:19. The others were tabbed the eight furlongs in 1:47, but the effort of Flying Cross was the most impressive. He and Tatterdemalion went the first quarter in :25 and the half mile in :51, after which they were slowed down on a signal from trainer Healey to go the three-quarters in 1:19. BROOKLYN GOES QUARTER. At Idle Hour Farm trainer H. J. Thompson opened up Brooklyn and Billionaire a quarter of a mile in :23. They were accompanied by the older Banister and were preparing for a longer effort today. Frank Kerns, trainer of the Calumet Farm stable, resumed charge of his horses after a brief visit to his home in New York and found them in excellent condition, especially Privileged, Gosum and Galsun, the three Derby hopefuls in the large establishment. Dellor, James W. Parrishs Derby prospect, underwent his first gallop over the Keerie-land course yesterday morning, following his arrival from Miami. He is not intended for fast trials for several days yet. Hal Price Headley stated today that he will send only Whopper, Fraidy Cat and Bravado to New York in charge of Duval Headley and will retain fourteen horses for I campaigning at Keenland and Churchill Downs under his own direction. They are the older horses Hollyrood, Pelerine, Preeminent, Old Nassau, Sparta, Middle Brook, Catnap and Pennine and two-year-olds as yet unnamed WELLS BIG STABLE. One of the largest stables at Keeneland is that in charge of Howard Wells, who is training for Howard Oots, C. E. Hamilton, R, W. Mcllvain and D. B. Midkiff. The older horses among the twenty-six are Maple Ric-ca. Inspiration, Desgai, Airlap, Mt. Sard, War Minstrel and Banola. Members of the Southland Stable which Cliff Porter brought here from Miami are Above Par, Ceiling and the following two-year-olds: Pegginaway, Pin Money, Young Playtime, Time to Play, Rear Play, Playkix and Pedant. Porter took over the training of Gumption, Lucky Ducky, Real One and Hookit, older horses which wintered here. The juveniles include several of Play Times first crop, and they are a likely lot.
