LARGE STAKE SUBSCRIPTION 626 Nominations Made to Nine Stakes at Churchill Downs. Bashford Manor Stakes Receive 115 Sub- -scriptions and Debutante Stakes 109 Revive Kentucky Handicap. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 5 If the number and quality of horses eligible to compete in them is a criterion of what the racing public may expect, the eight stakes aside from the great Kentucky Derby, to be run during the spring meeting at Churchill Downs, are very likely to result in noteworthy attractions.- Including those named for the Derby, 626 subscriptions were made to the nine stakes for the meeting, which opens April 30 and closes May 30. The Derby, of course, attracted all of the nations best three-year-old prospects in its sixty-fourth running, scheduled May 7, and there is certain to come another brilliant chapter to add to its glamorous history. The Derby drew 103 nominations, but two other stakes, the Debutante Stakes, for two-year-old fillies; and the Bashford Manor Stakes, for two-year-olds, attracted a greater number of nominations each. The Bashford Manor received 115 subscriptions, while only six less were made for the Debutante Stakes. These are two outstanding spring events for juveniles. DERBY TRIAL ENTRIES. Seventy three-year-olds have been entered in the Derby Trial, which until this year has only been an overnight condition event. This new fixture is designed as a final opportunity for some of the Derby candidates to get together while completing their preparation or endeavoring to qualify for the 0,000 added race a few days later. In this new stake Col. M. J. Winn, president of the track, has a sparkling feature for Downs patrons. Nominations for the Derby Trial, which is at one mile, include most of the western ranking Derby hopefuls and a surprisingly large number of eastern candidates. As opportunities for the handicap stars, a renewal of the Clark Handicap, a revival of the Kentucky Handicap and two new stakes, the Louisville Handicap and the Churchill Downs Handicap, will be offered. Of these the Churchill Downs Handicap has been supported to the extent of fifty-five entries, while forty-one were named for the Louisville Handicap and thirty-nine are eligible for the Clark. KENTUCKY OAKS. The Kentucky Oaks, for three-year-old fillies, appears destined to have one of its most glowing renewals, as no less than fifty-eight were named when nominations closed for this fixture, which, like the Clark Handicap, is as old as the famous Derby.
