STAGEHAND EXPECTED AT DOWNS NEXT MONDAY LEAVING COAST FRIDAY , Tiger and Mountain Ridge Arrive at Churchill Downs. Teddys Comet Declared Prom Derby Will Be Shipped to Texas for Long Rest. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 5. Simultaneous with the arrival of Tiger and Mountain Ridge, two leading contenders for the Kentucky Derby, came word that Stagehand, current favorite for the 0,000 added fixture to be renewed at Churchill Down3 on May 7, would arrive at the Derby track next Monday morning. The winner of the Santa Anita Derby and the Santa Anita Handicap, owned by Maxwell Howard and trained by Earl Sande, is to leave California Friday, and his stable companions, including The Chief, another Derby threat, are to accompany him across the continent. Lawrin, outstanding three-year-old of the Florida season and winner of Hialeahs Flamingo Stakes under the colors of Herbert M. Woolf, is en route from Miami and is scheduled to reached the Churchill Downs siding early Tuesday morning. A division of the Woolf stable, including Joe Schenck, also named for the Derby, came in from Florida today, and trainer B. A. Jones remained behind to accompany the shipment headed by the crack Lawrin. TIGER WON DERBY. Tiger and Mountain Ridge came off the car from Hot Springs, where Tiger edged his way farther out in the Derby limelight by winning the Arkansas Derby last Saturday. They were unloaded in a light drizzle, but while the weather was somewhat disagreeable, both of the colts, the chief hopes of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, moved about gingerly and showed a great deal of interest in fresh surroundings. Meanwhile owner Emerson F. Woodward and trainer J. J. Flanigan were reaching a definite conclusion regarding Woodwards Derby entry, Teddys Comet, which last year finished high up in the juvenile ranks. As the colt had not been doing well for some time, though he did indulge in several workouts since reaching Louisville from California, it was decided that his chances for getting to the Derby post were too remote because of a suspicious ankle to warrant taking the risk. According to Flanigan, nothing further will be done with the horse for some time. Teddys Comet will be sent to Woodwards Valdina Farms in Texas, where he will be turned out, perhaps until fall. REGRETTABLE LOSS. The loss of Teddys Comet from the Derby picture is a regrettable one, as Woodward, an enthusiastic horse fancier, had strongly counted upon starting this horse in the Churchill Downs fixture. The stable has -three other eligibles, Sorties Son, Diavolo Boy and Lassator, none of which, on their juvenile records, might be considered as formidable as their ailing stablemate. According to Sande, who discussed his plans by telephone with the veteran horseman, Phil Reilly, an arrival from Santa Anita a week ago, Stagehand has resumed brisk training following a rest after his triumph ir the 00,000 Santa Anita Handicap. Naturally, Sandes confidence in his Derby hand of Stagehand and The Chief has not ebbed a particle, Reilly ventured. Besides the Derby horses, Sande will bring Scene-shifter and Fencing, which are eligible for Continued on twentieth page. : STAGEHAND EXPECTED AT DOWNS NEXT MONDAY Continued from first page. the Clark Handicap to be run on the opening day of the meeting, and several others, jockey Jack Westrope likely will have the mount on Stagehand in the Derby and will come along with Sande from the coast. Cant Wait, Myron Selznicks Derby three-year-old trained by J. "Tommy" Taylor, further loosened his muscles by breezing three furlongs, hard held, here this morning. The short spin, for which he was timed in :42. launched his Derby prep here. He arrived from California last week. Mrs. Thelma Otts locally owned Employer also resumed training when he worked a half mile in :55, his first breeze since a mild illness forced trainer Bryant Ott to keep him indoors for a short time. Lassator, Invincible, Pepper, Cooks Memorial and Hollywood Ace were other Derby horses to work at the Downs or Douglas Park today.
