WESTERN DERBY DRAWS 13 Lavengro Named for ,000 Three-Year-Old Coast Race. Shares Current Favoritism With Specify for Bay Meadows Headliner Nest Saturday Afternoon. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 5. Thirteen three-year-olds have been named for the California Derby to be run at Bay Meadows April 9. Nominations closed with Taring secretary Morrison Wednesday night and among the "bakers dozen" entered are some of the outstanding horses of their age now performing in the West. Thoc whose owners have elected to try for the ,000 added purse are Rommy, Wing and Wing, Triplane, Kumreigh, Alaskan, Lavengro, Step By, Cue Ball, Specify, Iron Hills, Roy T., Grim Reaper and Open Door. Lavengro and Specify are- the early favorites for the race, with Roy T. and Rommy seeming to be next in line. The others appear to be over their heads. Lavengro, which was one of the best horses to perform in Florida during the past winter, is now at Bay Meadows, as are all the others with the .exception of Specify- Owner Baroni is expected to send his good olt north from Santa Anita next week. Specify was numbered among the first half dozen three-year-olds at Santa Anita during the past winter. He performed creditably against such good young horses as Stagehand, Cant Wait, Sir Raleigh, Legal Light and Sun Egret and, in fact, led all those horses to the stretch in the rich Santa Anita Derby. Previous to the running of the Santa Anita Derby, owner Baroni stated that he believed Specify would develop into a better horse than Top Row. MACAROO STABLE REPRESENTATIVE.. Lavengro, which raced in the Norman W. Church colors in Florida, will bear the silks of the newly formed Macaroo Stable in the California Derby. Owner Church, who refuses to race his horses in California while the present horse racing board is in power, has leased his star three-year-old out for the Bay Meadows and Tanforan meetings. Early in the Florida season Lavengro was regarded as the most formidable foe of Law-rin, winner of the Flamingo Stakes and outstanding star of the Hialeah meeting. In fact, Lavengro defeated Lawrin in a sprint race early in the southern meeting. Lavengro is no stranger to turf patrons of the Bay district and will have a large following when he goes postward in the California Derby. The colt won the first race of his career at Tanforan. Roy T., which races for W. E. Boeing of Seattle, is an up-and-coming three-year-old which Boeing acquired from the Valdina Farms stable during the Santa Anita meeting. Roy T. has improved since coming under the care of Ted Horning and seems destined to develop into a fine horse. Not only is he capable of sprinting three-quarters in 1:11 or better, but he will go on, as was proved when he picked up a good field of sprinters in the stretch recently and went on to win. - ,. ROMMY HIGHLY TREED. Rommy has been tried, high, wide and handsome. He has been pitted against Sea-biscuit and the best of the older horses and has raced in sprints and distance races. He has been nominated for the Bay Meadows handicap as well as the California Derby. An erratic post actor, he has shown fine form on occasions and could give any three-year-old on the grounds some trouble if he fan his best race. Of the others, Alaskan and Iron Hills seem best, but few would dream that they could defeat horses of the caliber of Specify and Lavengro. Iron Hills chief claim to f.me is a victory in the California Breeders Handicap at Santa Anita. Alaskan is a hard stretch-running horse in ordinary company. The rest of the California Derby field belong in claiming races.
