Here and There on the Turf War Admirals Impos t Revealed Is Standout in Metropolitan Mucho Gusto Tropical Choice Charlotte Girl Goes on Winning I.-----.-----------------. John B. Campbell thinks about the same as Charles J. McLennan about the ability of War Admiral, as revealed in his imposts for the Metropolitan Handicap, Belmont Parks annual spring mile feature. The Widener Challenge Cup winner was assigned 132 pounds for the Metropolitan by the New York handicapper, this being the same package he would have to shoulder in the Dixie Handicap, but if the four-year-old son of Man o War Brushup, by Sweep, accepts the engagement it will be contrary to his intentions for Pimlicos popular mile and three- j sixteenths race. War Admiral soon is to move, along with his mates in the Glen Riddle Farm stable, to Belmont Park, and that shipment may be construed as an indication that he will pass up the Dixie, Riddle having stated that his star colt would not be subjected to excessive imposts. Other owners may not consider 132 pounds for either the Dixie or Metropolitan as too much, however, j War Admiral really is better treated in the Metropolitan than in the Dixie because of the three-sixteenths of a mile difference in the distances of the two races, although the same scale applies to both. That he may go in the Belmont race is a possibility, because he probably will be coming back at that time after his letup following the successful Florida campaign, and a mile race would fit him nicely if included in the program which has been arranged for the colt. Last years undefeated three-year-old champion certainly would be a short-priced favorite for the Metropolitan if the standing of the candidates is the same as now, which would show just how the experts and public feel about his chances in the race, which in its long history frequently has been taken by the top weight. Grey Lag turned the feat under 133 pounds in 1923. Principal opponents of the Rancocas stalwart were Dinna Care and Exodus, both of which were in receipt of much weight from Grey Lag. With or without War Admiral, the Metropolitans present line-up of twenty-eight horses is one of the weakest in the long history of the event, and Campbell appears well justified in assigning the Glen Riddle star 132 pounds and the next horse ten pounds less. He is Snark, which was victorious last spring under 112 pounds over Memory Book and Whopper. We believe Samuel D. Riddle could look forward to a victory by War Admiral in the Metropolitan with an almost certain expectancy of victory, but the Philadelphia patron just isnt keen about seeing too much weight on his medium-sized colt. Riddle, however, cannot expect to see War Admiral treated any easier in open handicaps as long as the colts record is as impressive as it stands at present. If Riddle doesnt intend to run War Admiral in such races as the Metropolitan, an expression to that effect would be welcomed by the public. Mucho Gusto will attempt to maintain his unbeaten record at Tropical Park during the two meetings this winter in the Tropical Handicap, which features the close of the highly successful season at the Coral Gables course Saturday. With 0,000 in added money, the Tropical Handicap can prove the most valuable victory in the long campaign of the six-year-old son of Marvin May and Sweetheart Time, by Hanbridge, and he needs only to run back to his other successful efforts at the Gables track to turn the trick, even though handicapper Robert S. Shelley has seen fit to assign him top weight of 124 pounds. He is well able to handle, such an impost. One of the principal can- didates, Brush Hook, is out of the race, due to injury. Sold by Kirby Ramsey a year previously for ,500 and taken back for slightly less than that sum in the Araho dispersal Mucho Gusto already has won himself out, yet his best chance is yet to come. With the close of the Hialeah meeting, most of the better juveniles ended their winter campaign, among them Elwood Sachenmaiers Charlotte Girl, winner of the filly division of the Nursery Stakes. With the daughter of Cohort and Virginella out of the way, Sweet Patrice, runner-up to Charlotte Girl in the Nursery, went on a winning spree at Tropical Park, her four triumphs being climaxed in the Viscaya Purse. Charlotte Girl, which did not clash with Maeline formerly Hireling and the other fast colts in the Hialeah Championship Stakes, kept her record intact by scoring handily in the Bowie Kindergarten Stakes, the southern Marylands annual spring dash of four furlongs for youngsters. With the track muddy and having only four opponents, probably due to the fact that the race was offered the first of the meeting, Charlotte Girl responded well when called upon, just as she had done in her Hialeah performances and she must be reckoned as an outstanding candidate for the Aberdeen Stakes at Havre, de Grace. It was erroneously stated in this column yesterday that Ernie White would be the new pari-mutuel manager at Omaha this spring. The management of Ak-Sar-Ben wishes us to announce that the mutuel manager is Lou Walger. 1
