CURTAIL CALIENTE MEETING Mexican Track to Operate on Two-Day Basis Starting April 9. General Manager Joseph J. Russo Announces All Stakes Fixtures Will Be Run as Scheduled. AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, April 5. Racing at the Agua Caliente Turf Club track will be curtailed to Saturdays and Sundays only starting April 9, it was announced today by general manager Joseph J. Russo. The track will operate on the two-day basis until such time as conditions warrant the addition of one or two days to the weekly program, but until then the Friday cards will be discontinued. All of the listed stakes will be held as scheduled and claiming purses will not be decreased, rather there is a possibility they will be boosted considerably. Decision to curtail racing was made by the board of directors as the only solution to conditions now existing over which the management has no control. In announcing the change in Agua Calientes plans, Russo issued the following statement: WILL RUN STAKES. "Because of conditions over which the management has no control, the Agua Caliente Turf Club will operate Saturdays and Sundays only, starting April 9. "All stake fixtures positively will be run as scheduled. The ,500 Speed Handicap, which will attract the outstanding sprinters on the Pacific Coast, will be held- April 17, the ,500 San Diego Handicap will be offered May 8 and the ,000 Decoration Day Handicap will be run May 30. "There will be no decrease in purses for the claiming races. In fact, we are consider-" ing seriously the possibility of boosting the amount of some of the claiming purses. "It is the intention and the desire of the Agua Caliente Turf Club to add one or two days to the weekly program just as soon as conditions, which we now are facing, have been settled satisfactorily." Racing will be resumed Saturday, with the running of a nine-event card featured by the 00 Calexico Handicap, a six furlongs sprint for three-year-olds and upward. Ten races will be offered Sunday, including the ,000 Enzenda Handicap, a six furlongs preparation race for the ,500 Speed Handicap, April 17, and the Mexicali Claiming Handicap,, at a mile and one-sixteenth, for a purse of 00.
