J. T. TAYLORS DERBY HOPE Cant Wait Showing in Wood Memorial to Be Test. Good Effort in Jamaica Feature Will Qualify Small Colt for Big Louisville Feature. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 5. The first of the Kentucky Derby candidates which were campaigned in California during the winter made his appearance at Churchill Downs, Saturday when Cant Wait, the slightly built, but hard running son of Victorian which races under the colors of Myron Selznick, motion picture producer, unloaded here. Cant Wait headed a shipment of ten horses which trainer J. T. Taylor brought, here from the Pacific Coast. In spite of his slender stature, Cant Wait has made quite a record for himself and he commands a great deal of respect in racing circles.. He closed his juvenile campaign with a flourish, winning five of his last six engagements, including the Junior Champion Stakes at Aqueduct and with a little luck might have been one of the outstanding three-year-olds of the Santa Anita meeting. During a discussion of the colt, trainer Taylor said that the little fellow was unlucky to lose several very close decisions in important engagements at the Arcadia track and in the Santa Anita Derby could not get to going in his best fashion. Taylor said that at one stage of the Santa Anita Derby Cant Wait was in rather close quarters. NARROW DEFEAT. The two narrow defeats suffered by the Selznick horse came in the Derby Trial Handicap and the Chiquita Handicap. In the former race he was beaten only a nose by Stagehand, to which he conceded six pounds, while in the latter Sir Raleigh led him to the finish by a short head. From his remarks, Taylor Is not willing to concede that his Kentucky Derby nominee is overshadowed by many in his division. His program for Cant Wait is to prepare him here for the Wood Memorial Stakes at Jamaica and his showing in that race is to determine whether he will be sent back to Churchill Downs for the 50,000 Special on May 7. Taylor, an able horseman, has handled a number of top flight performers and is not prone to become too enthusiastic, therefore his confidence in Cant Wait should not be taken too lightly. Be that as it may, Cant Waits presence at the local track adds importance, to Derby activity there and the advancement of the Selznick racer will be followed with intense interest. Besides the horses owned by Selznick, Taylor also has racers for Arnold and W. A. Hanger, Mrs. R. B. Fairbanks and for his own account. Several which he brought from California are to be retired, while others, which have been running out, are to be placed in the string. TO USE "FIRING" IRONS. Bright News, owned by Taylor, is to be fired for ankle ailments and a suspicious knee, while Mrs. Fairbanks Fond Memories is to be retired and bred to Head Play. Planetoid, a filly which Taylor raced with much success, also goes to the court of Head Play this season. The three-year-olds Who Done It, Minimum, and the four-year-old Roller-Coaster, all belonging to Selznick, and W. A. Hangers Down Hill and the Natoma Stables Big Victory, have just come off the farm and will be prepared for the coming season. The only ailing horse in the shipment from California was the filly Tragic Muse, which ran a slight temperature upon unloading here. Several weeks ago Taylors brother, Walter, left Santa Anita for Bay Meadows with the horses Count Edward, Enchanted, Wood-berry, Silver Doctor, Tea Hound, Cane Ridge, Whos There, Our Dream and Ataturk. Another Derby hopeful of merit, Birt Friends Co-Sport, was expected here momentarily from Miami. The Cincinnati-owned candidate, trained by R. T. Runnels, has a great number of admirers in this section and as little concerning his Derby status has been heard in recent weeks, considerable interest attaches to his arrival. Besides several others trained by Runnels, the horses of Mose Goldblatt, also of Cincinnati, were reported in the same car. Downs officials were advised that trainer B. A. Jones, with the Woolford Farm string, headed by the Flamingo Stafies winner, Lawrin, another ranking Derby candidate, would pull up stakes at Hialeah Park and start for Churchill Downs today.
