Twenty Years of Future Books on KENTUCKY DERBY and the Results mi t . - 4 The 1927 Derby resulted in a Whitney victory, no surprise to the public because they made the New Yorkers entry of Whiskery and Bostonian the mutuel favorites, although both horses opened at 20 to 1 in the future books. J. E. Wideners Osmand was the favorite in the futures at 6 to 1, with Rip Rap remember him?, as second choice at 8. As the betting progressed after the announcement of the first line on February 28, Osmand went down only one point and Whiskery and Bostonian receded to 30 to 1 by the middle of April. Fred Jr. opened at 50, went to 100 and then plummeted to 15, which was the last future quotation on his chances. Scapa Flow opened at 10 and wound up at 12. Jock was a 50 to 1 chance and climbed to .60. Rolled Stocking was first quoted at 25, went to 30 and then down to 20. War Eagle was another 20 to 1 chance. In the mutuels on Derby Day the Whitney pair were 240 to 100, Rolled Stocking was 470 to 100, the Widener pair, Osmand and Kiev, 690 to 100, and Scapa Flow, 700 to 100. Whiskery won, Osmand was second and Jock gave the McLean entry backers a thrill by finishing third. It was a good field and a good race, with only Hydromel, 200 to 1 on April 14, the long-shot players big horse, finishing fourth.
