I THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 FIGHTING FOX Bay colt, by Sir Gallahad III. Marguerite; owned by William Woodward. Trained by James Fitzsimmons. By NORRIS ROYDEN - - Only Stagehand, by virtue of his accomplishments at Santa Anita this winter, stands between Fighting Fox and the post of favoritism for the Kentucky Derby, and this latest of William Woodwards stoutly-bred horses ranks so highly on the promise more than the results of his five starts as a two-year-old. Fightihg Fox is a full brother to Gallant Fox, which came off of a two-year-old record similar to that of this latest son of Sir Gallahad III. and Marguerite, by Celt, to establish himself as one of the best three-year-olds this country has ever seen. Gallant Fox started seven times as a juvenile, winning the Flash and Junior Champion Stakes, placing second in the United States Hotel Stakes and third to Whichone and Hi-Jack in the Futurity. At that time the Junior Champion, then a mile, came after the Futurity. Now it precedes the richest and most important two-year-old race in the country and is at six and one-half furlongs. Fighting Fox began his career with a victory in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, then was third in the Hopeful, second in the Junior Champion and third in both the Champagne Stakes and Futurity, Those performances constitute the record of Fighting Fox, and if anything they are in a more favorable light in comparison with the two-year-old efforts of his older brother. At the present time Fighting Fox is training splendidly at Aqueduct under James Fitzsimmons, who has developed more outstanding distance horses in fHis country in the past dozen years than any other man and including a pair of Derby winners in Gallant Fox and Omaha as well as a near champion three-year-old in Granville. All of these horses lacked precocity as two-year-olds, just as did Fighting Fox, yet when it came time for them to deliver, Fitzsimmons brought out their power. In addition to being a brother to Gallant Fox, Fighting Fox also is a half-brother to Petee-Wrack, a high-class race horse himself. They are put of the Celt mare, Marguerite, whose next dam. is a daughter of Radium. Fighting Fox is a good-sized, ruggedly-made colt and thoroughly sound, even though one of his legs is not as straight as it might be and his action is hardly as smooth as that of War Admiral. Cavalcade flipped one of his front feet sideways but that did not prevent him from being a champion. In his first start and maiden victory, Fighting Fox encountered a drying-out track, but he ran the six furlongs in 1:12, coming from behind in the final quarter, to defeat Mountain Ridge by a length as The Chief was third and Regal Sun fourth. The going was heavy for the Hopeful, but he was well up all the way and bid for the lead at the furlong pole, only to weaken near the end to lose by slightly more than three lengths to Sky Larking, and with Bull Lea barely outgaming him for the place. Cant Wait jumped up to run a remarkable race to defeat Fighting Fox in the Junior -Champion, drawing away in the final furlong to defeat the Belair colorbearer by six lengths in the time of 1:18, exceptional for any-aged horse at Aqueduct. Fighting Fox went evenly in the Champagne Stakes," a dash of six and one-half furlongs straightaway, to take third honors back of Menow and Bull Lea, the H. P. Headley colt beating him by five and, one-:half lengths, while he was at the heels of the Calumet Farm youngster. Menow, however, forged away from the son of Sir Gallahad in the final furlong of the Futurity, which was over the. same distance as the Champagne, while Tiger barely beat him out for secondary honors. By developing from one season to the next just as his brother did, and other sons and grandsons of Sir Gallahad, Fighting Fox can very well be Woodwards third Kentucky Derby winner and another of his sizeable list of outstanding performers. fFlyingFox TOrme TAjax -i Vampire lAmie jciamart 2 "S . . .1 Alice f fc-.
