THREE-YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 LAWRIN Brown colt, by Insco Margaret Lawrence; owned by Herbert M. Woolf. Trained by B. A. Jones. By NORRIS HOYDEN - Lawrin didnt quite make as good a reputation at Hialeali Park this winter as did Stagehand at Santa Anita, but he showed enough to command strong support for the Kentucky Derby, and possibly there are many observers who believe his form is as good as that shown by the West Coast champion, although he couldnt go on after his victory in the Flamingo Stakes because of not being eligible to the Widener Challenge Cup. The brown son of Insco and Margaret Lawrence is one capable horse which did not come from the recognized breeding centers, having been produced at the Woolford Farm of his owner, Herbert M. Woolf, near Kansas City, in Missouri. Both his sire and dam are there, the former being the promising Insco, a son of Sir Gallahad III. and Starflight, she a sister to North Star III. Benjamin A. Jones developed Lawrin, but he had to give the colt, a big, strongly-made fellow, a lot of training and racing before the horse struck his best form, and it is possible that Lawrin is still improving with the utmost in his ability to be displayed when he is sent over the longer distances of the important specials to come. The Woolford colt began racing on April 1, but not until his sixth start, which took place nearly two months later at Washington Park, was he able to graduate. Jones took a chance with him in this race, entering him to be claimed for ,000. Lawrin had to run five furlongs in :59 to defeat Aces Wild by a neck. His next start also resulted in a neck victory, the race being five and one-half furlongs at Arlington Park. He then was beaten off in a race won by Teddys Comet, but was second to Co-Sport at Lincoln Fields. Making two starts at Hawthorne, the Missouri colt was the runner-up again, losing to Roy T. and Glen Brush. Invading the East, Lawrin continued to land in second place, losing to Essjaytee at Jamaica, to Isaroma at Pimlico and Lavengro at Bowie. All of these races were at six furlongs, and in each he was going well at the finish. After only a slight let-up in training, Lawrin came back at Tropical Park in December to romp away with a dash of five and one-half furlongs, doing the distance in 1:05 to defeat -Wise Mentor by four lengths. Isaroma nosed him out at Hialeah in a six-furlong sprint, but that colt was hurt in the race and did not oppose the Woolford color-bearer when he won the Hialeah Stakes by five lengths over Co-Sport in the time of 1:11. Huskie Boy, Joe Schenck and other good colts were behind Co-Sport. Off that effort, he was favored for the Bahamas Handicap, in which he was the topweight with 126 pounds, but he was injured while at the post and performed in disappointing fashion. Trainer Jones was able to get him back to the races inside of two weeks, but Lawrin had to be content with third honors back of Galapas and Maetall, although he showed a winning effort, being jammed back badly approaching the far turn. He gained steadily through the stretch,, but had too much ground to make up. For his final preparation for the Flamingo, Lawrin was sent against older horses at one mile and, although giving weight on the scale to his opponents, he led all the way, covering the mile in 1:37 to defeat Brush Hook by half a length as Maericl was third and Columbiana fourth. , In tip-top shape for the Flamingo, Lawrin handled his impost of 120 pounds well to follow the early pace closely and go to the front in the stretch in courageous fashion to score by a length and a half over Bourbon King, while Pasteurized was third and Blind Eagle fourth. His time of 1:50 was very respectable in comparison with what had been shown at Hialeah all winter and two-fifths slower than Stagehands mark in the Santa Anita Derby for the same route. Lawrin is of the improving type, both physically and by breeding, his dam being a daughter of Vulcain and otherwise possessing lines calculated to provide the stamina necessary to prove top class. fAjax i Flying Fox .
