GRIM REAPER DISPLAYS SPEED W. E. Boeing Has Strong Contender for California Derby. Son of Sickle Works Mile in 1:40 Between Races Wednesday Derby Favorite, Lavengro, In Fast Trial. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 7. Grim Reaper, the three-year-old son of Sickle, which W. E. Boeing of Seattle purchased from John Hay Whitney during the winter, loomed as a strong contender for Saturdays ,000 added California Derby, when he turned in a fine workout between races Wednesday. The colt reeled off a mile in 1:40 over an off track and could have traveled much faster. Grim Reaper worked in company with Roy T., previously considered the ace three-year-old of the Boeing barn, and administered a sound whipping to that stable companion. He. went to the front of Roy T. at the outset of the mile work and finished a good six lengths in advance of him. Grim Reaper seemingly is in excellent condition, and many look for him to provide the favored Lavengro with stiff opposition Saturday afternoon. ADAMS TO RIDE. The Boeing star will have no excuses in the Derby as far as riding is concerned, for jockey "Shorty" Adams has been engaged to do the riding. Adams is one of the most consistent jockeys in the West, and is at present leading the Bay Meadows riders. Lavengro, public choice for the California Derby, worked one-fifth second slower than Grim Reaper in his latest move, and Lavengro had a fast track for his trial. The Maca-rdo Stable entrant was on the track Thursday morning and traveled one mile in 1:40. Jockey Thompson was up and rated the colt for the first half mile. Trainer "Woody" Fitzgerald waved Lavengro down nearing the end of the move. Other Derby candidates to work out were Wing and Wing and Alaskan. Wing and Wing showed but little speed, while Alaskan breezed a slow mile. Trainer Jim Headley has not decided whether Alaskan or Kum-reigh or both will carry the silks of G. T. Williams, San Francisco steamboat man, in Saturdays race.
