MIAMI, Fla., April 7. Winding up his training impressively, Ramsey and Coppages Mucho Gusto, the early favorite, reeled off a fast mile in 1:39 late yesterday afternoon for his engagement in the 0,000 added Tropical Handicap at the Gables course Saturday. The first running of the 0,000 race will bring to a conclusion the record Tropical Park and ninety-six day Florida season. Mucho Gusto, winner of his four races at Tropical this winter, displayed a high turn of speed to cover the half mile in :48, the six furlongs in 1:13 and then round out the mile smoothly in 1:39. Confined to his bed since the early part of the Hialeah meeting, R. FiCoppage, part owner of the Tropical favorite, is reported to be much improved and plans to witness the running of the closing day feature before leaving for Louisville, Ky. This morning the Millsdale Stables Infantry, for which jockey "Sonny" Workman will fly here to ride, matched Mucho Gustos final trial with a mile over the slower Tropical Park in :25, :49, 1:14 and 1:40. TATTERDEMALION WORKS. T. J. Healeys Tatterdemalion, one of the early favorites, also stepped a handy mile in :24, :48, 1:27 and 1:42, working at Hialeah. Over the same course Miss Mary Hirschs No Sir, runner-up in the 1937 Flamingo Stakes, whirled through a speedy five furlongs in 1:00, hitting the quarter in :23 and the half in :48. Cedar Farms Como No II., a Chilean invader, was breezed slowly over three-quarters of a mile in 1:25. William Vincent Dwyer, managing director of the Gables course, inaugurated the mile and a sixteenth Tropical Handicap this year to climax the Florida campaign. It supplants the ,000 Tropical Special, which was a condition affair restricted to three-year-olds. Twenty thousand turf patrons are expected to watch the inaugural running of the 0,000 race and to say farewell to a season which has set new records for Tropical Parks two meetings. General manager Frank D. Schuyler and his staff have been working throughout the week setting up additional facilities to handle the closing day crowd.
