JAMES MAY NOT RIDE THE CHIEF IN DERBY LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 25. While he had tentatively promised the Derby mount on The Chief to jockey Basil James, who is in California, Earl Sande, trainer of the Maxwell Howard horse, indicated a possible change in those plans. He said that James had advised him that he probably could not reach Louisville until the day before the Derby and then he would have to make the long trip by plane, and as Sande had hoped to have him here earlier, possibly in time to have him ride the horse in the Derby Trial next Tuesday, another rider may be secured. Jack Westrope, under engagement to the Howard stable and who will guide that establishments Stagehand, current favorite for the race, in the classic, came here from Santa Anita with Sande.
