LAWRIN WORKS ONE MILE IN 1:42! AT LOUISVILLE a a TIGER OUT OF DERBY Woolf Coifs Gallop Refutes Unfounded Rumors of Lameness. Mountain Ridge Chief Reliance of Mars Stable in Big Race- Speed Up Preliminaries. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 25 Setting at rest a rumor that there was something seriously wrong with Herbert M. Woolfs Kentucky Derby colt, Lawrin, by working him a snappy mile Sunday morning, B. A. Jones, trainer of the Missouri-owned candidate, Today, added his voice to that rebuttal by stating that, in his opinion, the son of Insco would run just as good in the Derby as he did in winning the Flamingo Stakes at Hia-leah Park and might even improve on that performance, which established Lawrin as the best three-year-old in Florida. In his trial yesterday which was over a fast but deep track at Churchill Downs, the Woolf horse reeled off a mile in 1:42. He was accompanied by the older stable companion, Robert L., arid while beating the latter about a length, did his move in handy fashion. Trainer Jones had the trials inaugurated at the stand, and the two went on even terms for three-quarters, for which they were timed in 1:15, a quarter in :24, half in :48, and five-eighths in 1:01. After three-quarters, Lawrin slowly pulled away from Robert L., the latter running the mile in l:424i. ENCOURAGES TRAINER. This morning Jones had the Derby horse out for a gallop, and the spirited manner in which he went through his light exercise further encouraged his trainer and connections. Lawrin is acting every bit as well as he did just prior to the Flamingo Stakes, Jones assured. He said he could not understand how such an unfounded report originated. Since reaching the Downs, Lawrin has been equipped with a bar plate on his left forefoot, but this was done merely to protect the foot which was injured in Florida, and the plate will be replaced by a regular shoe in a few days. The Woolf three-year-old may start in a six-furlong race here Saturday, opening day, and again the following Tuesday in the Derby Trial Stakes, Jones said. SANDES PLANS. Trainer Earl Sandes plans for Maxwell Howards Stagehand and The Chief now provide for vtheir entry in the Derby Trial Stakes as a final prep for the Derby four "days later. Sande said today that he had definitely abandoned plans to send The Chief to Lexington for the Blue Grass Stakes Thursday because it would interrupt what the trainer believes has been an eminently satisfactory training program for the two horses. If The Chief went to Lexington, Sande said that he would be required to break the training combination and Stage- Continued on fifteenth page. Mountain Ridge today definitely became the lone reliance of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars in the Derby, as Tiger was officially withdrawn from the classic Tiger, the victim of a bruise while working here last week, is walking again, but trainer Robert McGar-vey says the lay-off precluded getting the colt to the Derby post. As for Mountain Ridges race at Keeneland last Saturday, Mc-Garvey said it was an experimental test and that the colt would have an additional opportunity in the Derby Trial, in which his trainer believes he will show to much better advantage. With the opening only a few days off, preparations went forward at greater speed today and while training at both the Downs and Douglas Park was light, preparatory activity was plentiful. The heads of all departments were at their desks this morning and their offices began to present busy scenes.
