WAR ADMIRAL ON EDGE Riddle Star Shows Brilliant Speed in Belmont Workout. Works One Mile in 1 :38 4/5 Preparing for Saturdays Renewal of the Suburban Handicap. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 26.— In a sparkling display of speed at Belmont Park yesterday morning. War Admiral completed preparation for his engagement Saturday in the 0,000 added Suburban Handicap, which has attracted much attention since the cancellation of the match race with Seabiscuit. George Conway, developer of the popular son of Man o War and Brush Up, unbeaten since his two-year-old days, sent him a mile over a fast track in 1:38*5, the colt going well within himself all the way. The workout was one of the most impressive seen on Long Island this season, and it left the impression with the dockers that the Samuel D. Riddle star is going into his Suburban engagement at the top of his form, even though he has not had the benefit of a seasoning race, as he had for previous important contests. War Admiral went through his trial over the main course at Belmont Park. Starting a sixteenth before the mile post, he in reality went a mile and one-eighth, considering the gradual manner in which he was eased up at the end, but his time from the mile ground home was a shade better than 1:39. Off in his best stride, the mighty atom went the opening furlong in :11%, quarter in :?24r,. three-eighths in :34S, half in :47. five furlongs in :59-s, three-quarters in 1:12. and seven-eighths in 1:24S. Those dockers who happened to time War Admiral from the mile and a sixteenth and carried him through an additional sixteenth at the end had 154 for the mile and one furlong. BECOMES HOT FAVORITE. When news of War Admirals splendid trial was spread at Belmont Park this afternoon, be became more of a favorite than ever for the Suburban, and it was generally estimated that his odds would never be any greater than 7 to 5 and probably range down to even money or less, even though he will be the top weight with 132 pounds on his back, more than he ever has been asked to carry. Pompoon. which gained many supporters by the impressiveness of his Dixie Handicap victory, continued to rule a strong second choice, and many persons believe the Suburban will resolve into a stretch battle between the Pompey colt and War Admiral. Aneroid, which went through a fine public workout Wednesday afternoon, probably will be third in demand. Another prominent Suburban candidate given s final trial was Snark, but the Wheat-ley Stable veteran was restrained to a slow pace at Aqueduct. He was sent a mile and a. furlong by trainer James Fitzsimmons. but was under restraint in turning the distance in 2:02. Continued on thirtieth page. WAR ADMIRAL ON EDGE Continued from first page. With eight going postward in the Suburban, the mile and one-quarter event will have a gross value of 4,900, of which the winners net share will be 7,550. Attention to the attractiveness of the Suburban was pointed out at a meeting of the New York State Racing Commissioners today by Herbert Bayard Swope and John Sloan, at which a resolution approving the attitude of the Westchester Racing Association in not attempting a substitution on the match race was passed. Approval was also given the announcement made by C. V. Whitney, Belmont Park vice-president, ordering a refund of all seat money already received for the race. Chairman Swope made the following comment: "The Suburban, among Americas greatest and most important handicaps, promises this year to be one of the best in its history through the presence of War Admiral and Pompoon. This is a match in itself, to which all lovers of a keen contest would travel miles. VIRTUALLY A MATCH. "Pompoons record-breaking performance in the Dixie makes him fit and ready to take on War Admiral, especially as the latter has not had a race since March, and there are other horses that will add to the competition such as Snark, world record holder at six and one-half furlongs; Rex Flag, Aneroid, Unfailing, a sharp four-year-old, which won last years Lawrence Realization, and Masked General, which came within a small margin of a victory over War Admiral last year. Six other good races will complete Saturdays program. "Mondays card, although losing the match race, promises fine sport with two stakes, i the Corinthian Steeplechase and the Juvenile, for two-year-olds. Also there will be an unusually good handicap at seven-eighths of a mile. "Therefore, the commission, while regretting the misfortune that has overtaken Sea-biscuit, preventing the special match race, feels that Belmont will be able to supply the publics expectation for good racing on the two holidays."
