DEEP END JUST LASTS TO WIN Defeats Wise Counsel by Nose in Thrilling Stretch Duel — Weather Inclement at Suffolk Downs. BOSTON, Mass., May 26. — Paragon Stables Deep End barely lasted to win the three-quarters Newspaper Photographers Purse which featured a cold and rainy day of sport at Suffolk Downs this afternoon. The winner made the pace, but Mike Sarno had to drive him to the last ounce to stave off the stretch bid of Marty Maddens Wise Counsel. His margin at the end was a nose. There also was a gruelling battle for the show with William Palmer taking that award by a nose over Family Friend, stable-mate of the winner. Counsuello was the first out of the stalls, but Deep End overhauled her rapidly, widening out to two lengths lead in the back stretch. Jane Vito pursued her to the turn for home with King Pharamond well up and Wise Counsel rated in fifth place. The latter made a run at the leader at the head of the stretch and Family Friend and William Palmer drove up at the same time. At the sixteenth pole it appeared impossible Deep End could last it out, but Sarno went to work on his mount in earnest in the final seventy yards and drove him up again just when it appeared certain he would be headed. The track was still fast for the race, despite the fact that light rains had been falling throughout the afternoon. Deep End completed the distance in 1:12, flat. Adverse weather conditions caused a light I crowd to turn out for the sport today but the betting held up well despite this fact, well supported horses won most of the races on the card.
