OWNERS HANDICAP TRIALS Chance Ray Is Probable Choice for Hawthornes Saturday Feature. Gallops One Mile in 1:40 Handily Victory Would Give Davison His Second Straight Victory. CICERO, 111., Oct. 6. A splendid workout by Clarence Davisons Chance Ray has established that veteran as a probable choice for victory in the 2,500 added Illinois Owners Handicap, to be run here on Saturday, closing day of Hawthornes meeting. Chance Ray went a mile yesterday morning in 1:40, handily, and his fractions were :47, 1:00, 1:13 and 1:26. It was one of the best trials seen over the West Side oval in some time, and showed the six-year-old gelding is at his best right now. A win for Chance Ray would give his owner a second straight triumph in the only stake styled for Illinois horsemen. Davison captured the race last year with Our Count, which recently broke his leg and was destroyed. HER HEIGH WORKS. William Maloneys Her Reigh, conqueror of Chance Ray at Washington Park, but which finished well back of him in the Hawthorne Handicap here last week, also was out for a good move yesterday. Her Reigh, sent a mile, accomplished the distance in 1:45, breezing. Mrs. Emil Dene-marks pair of Chasar and Uneasy, which also will rate much consideration in the mile and a sixteenth stake, were sent ten furlongs in company, going the distance in 2:07, handily, in fine moves. Chasars fractions were :49, 1:14, 1:41. Uneasys times were the same except that he was caught at the six furlongs in a fifth of a second faster time. A few of the juveniles who will meet in the six and a half furlongs Juvenile Handi7 cap were out for easy trials. FINALE OF MEETING. The two stakes that will mark the end of the Chicago major racing season are expected to draw eight of ten starters each. An Illinois-owned two-year-old, Morris Ve-hons Smart Trick, will be favorite to give the local horsemen a clean sweep of the stake card. Smart Trick has won two stakes already, and despite her impost of 122 pounds, will be a short priced choice for a third. However, the extra sixteenth of a mile in the Juvenile Handicap may be a factor that will provide an upset. .None of the two-year-olds has yet been sent the six and a half furlongs distance.
