CLODION SCORES AT JAMAICA Wins Warwick Handicap Over Sloppy Track, With Sunport and He Did Second and Third Respectively. JAMAICA, N. Y., Oct. 6. Clodion, conqueror of the fleet Merry Lassie in the Jamaica Handicap last April but unsuccessful since that stake triumph, returned to the winners ranks at the same course today, as he drove to victory in the six furlongs Warwick Handicap, the sprint event which featured a rainy afternoons competition. Over a track surfaced by light slop, the four-year-old son of Pharamond II. and Alice Gass raced the distance in 1:13, to register by his own length, over Sunport, with the latter beating He Did by a nose for place. A neck farther away the pacemaking Bold Turk was leading Clean Out, the only other starter, and a strong public choice, by half a dozen lengths. There was some action for the W. A. Carter gelding as he went to the post at 10-1, after opening at that price. It was his first start since early August, at Narragansett Park, and the freshening he had received since that occasion brought him back to competition in tip-top condition. The score was witnessed by the lightest crowd of the meeting, as the rain which started shortly . before noon, dampened the ardor of many metropolitan turfgoers. BACK OF LEADER. The chances of Clodion appeared none too bright during the early stages, as he galloped along well off the pace of Bold Turk, which had quickly opened up a six lengths lead. Westrope was driving him . hard in what promised to prove an un-. availing chase for at the furlong mark the . pacemaker still was four lengths in front. Then, in the final sixteenth, the leader i collapsed suddenly and Clodion, coming i through with a sudden spurt, rushed up to take command about ten yards from the fin- ish, and draw into the clear in the closing strides. ; Sunport may have been best. He dropped , back to last place in the final eighth of a . mile and trailed the field until the home stretch was reached. Then he closed with a sharp burst of speed on the outside, to be going swiftest of all at the end. He Did, making his first appearance since last winter at Santa Anita, turned in a creditable effort, to be third. He went steadily all the way and should improve over this.
