PRINCE GEORGE AUTUMN HANDICAP DRAWS TWELVE Bowies Headliner Preliminary to Richer Stakes Which Follow Honey Cloud Among Overnight Entries and Assigned 116 Pounds May Be Favorite Rain Fails to Materialize and Track Should Be Fast BOWIE, Md., Nov. 18. The fifteenth renewal of the Prince George Autumn. Handicap, a mile and a sixteenth test for three-year-olds and upward, which is the Second of five stakes to be decided during the thirteen-day meeting at this course, will be the headline attraction on the week-end program tomorrow. This ,500 added affair serves as a preliminary for the richer Thomas K. Lynch Memorial and the Bryan and OHara Memorial, the last being the main event of the session. Twelve have been named for the half-holiday feature, with Honey Cloud, a winner of two straight stakes, second to Conquer in the handicap arrangement under his impost of 116 pounds. At Pimhco the High Cloud gelding whipped a keen band of sprinters in the Ritchie Handicap, and on the opening day of the present session scored a convincing triumphh in the Burch Memorial. Both were at six furlongs, and it is over this distance that "Whitey" Abels charge has shown to best advantage. Many are inclined to question his staying ability, but he finished well to be third in the Riggs Handicap, at a mile and three-sixteenths. That showing, coupled with the two stake victories which followed suggests he will rule the choice of the public in the Prince George. THREAT OF RAIN. There was a threat of rain in the skies early today, but this failed to materialize, and the track will be in good condition for tomorrows competition if there is no change in weather conditions within the next twenty-four hours. In the event of a muddy track it is understood Honey Cloud will be taken out to await the 0,000 Bryan and OHara Memorial. Conquer went into the six furlongs Burch Memorial with a lengthy string of distance triumphs to his credit. The representative of Mrs. Viau finished with a mighty rush in that sprint to be going swiftest of all at the end. The effort should sharpen him up to his best race, and he is bound to be a formidable factor. Clodion, winner of two straight stakes during 1938, came out of winter quarters to win first clack out of the box at Bowie in the spring. The son of Pharamond U. accounted for the Scarsdalc Handicap at Empire City late in October, and then moved on to Narragansett Park to perform creditably. Partial to the track and favorably rigged under 114 pounds, he should give an excellent account of himself. PROMINENT CONTENDER. Scrooge, another which raced at Empire City and later at Narragansett, has worked a mile in 1:47 over the Bowie track, nicely in hand, and he promises to prove a prominent contender. This fellow is a strong finisher and plenty of pace will be to his liking. It will be interesting to note how High Velocity runs in this stake. He scored at a mile and a sixteenth at Pimlico, and the following afternoon had a tough race under his belt when he registered in a hard drive in the mile and a half Grayson Stakes. If he comes through with a winning effort Continued on twenty-sixth page. PRINCE GEORGE AUTUMN HANDICAP DRAWS ELEVEN Continued from first page. here hell be little short of an iron horse. However, he is a crack Bowie performer, as the records will attest. Guy Bedwell again has entered the A. C. Compton pair Sun Egret and Clingendaal. Doubtless he is hoping for rain and a muddy track for the first named. It would seem that this is needed for a stable victory. Clingendaal turned in a better effort than the three-year-old in the Burch Memorial, but hell have to improve over that to score tomorrow. MUD WELL FAVOR CHANCEVEEW. Chanceview won his stake through the mud last year and only such footing will make him formidable in the week-end renewal. At least that is the evidence offered by his last race. The spot looks too tough for Indomitable, while Mr. Canrons Bowie Handicap effort was not much. As for Room Service and Unhei-alded, they appear outclassed. The Prince George of today is not as important a stake as it was a decade or so back. Probably the best horse ever to win it was Jock, which packed 123 pounds in the 1927 renewal to travel the mile and a sixteenth in 1:44. Thats fast time at Bowie. The following year Nassak, favored by a ten-pound weight pull, took the measure of Sun Beau, then in his three-year-old form and destined to become the worlds greatest money-winning thoroughbred. The peak in prize money for the event was reached in 1931, when 0,000 was added, with Pittsburgher taking down the heavy end when he whipped the crack Maryland mare, Tred Avon.
