SHREVEPORT FAVORITES CLICK Public Choices Fare Well Friday Considering Deep Racing Strip. Dunfox Demonstrates Mud Running Ability by Trouncing Oddesa Beau by Wide Margin Cornelia Powell Wins Easily. SHREVEPORT, La., Nov. 18. Favorites clicked with amazing regularity this afternoon at the State Jockey Clubs Fair Grounds here despite the fact that an off track prevailed for the staging of the days offering of eight races as the result of the heavy rains of the early morning. However, the racing strip was not deep and was termed as slow for the running off of the program, which was headed by the Fair Park Purse, occupying fifth position and bringing together a field of eight routers to match strides for a mile and seventy yards. Dunfox, flying the blue and white silks of C. A. Roberts, demonstrated his mud running ability beyond question when the six-year-old gelding trounced. Oddesa Beau by four lengths after having shaken off early challenges during the first five furlongs. Sporting Maudie landed the show portion of the purse. KEEPER STARS. Under the guidance of apprentice Paul Keiper, who has been displaying excellent saddle form throughout the Shreveport autumn meeting, Dunfox showed a courageous effort and the triumph was his second chalked up at the local course. Dunfox was hustled into the lead before the field reached the first turn, and it was with some difficulty that he managed to hold a slight advantage over Oddesa Beau until the final quarter was reached at which point the gelded son of Dunlin Little Fox drew clear and added gradually to his margin. Increasing coldness and the slow track did not have any material effect on the attendance and another large gathering of racing fans was present for the next to the closing card. Racing back to his recent impressive victory, W. Browns chestnut horse, My Model, made it two straight by romping home in advance of his rivals in the opener, a dash of about five furlongs. Tardy Jest was second, three lengths behind the winner, with Tangalo a tiring third. My Model, an even-money choice, never left the result in doubt at any stage as he assumed a commanding lead after rounding the first turn and, having something in reserve, was well in hand. Finding the soft footing definitely to her liking, the Skaal Stables High Hand n. easily took down the decision in the second, another dash affair of about five furlongs, j The chestnut daughter of Genie High ! Spade defeated He Devil by the comfortable margin of two and a half lengths and Chronology held on to best the others for third. High Hand II. showed high speed to take the lead soon after the start, but was hard pressed during the opening three furlongs. SKOTCHY WINS. Capably handled by the veteran reinsman, Jimmy Dillea, R. C. Groffs bay gelding, Skotchy, was returned the winner in the third race, which engaged a field of nine starters. Elect Jessie finished secondf and Lernana was third to reach the finish line. Skotchy was rushed into the lead soon after the break and was taken in hand while setting the pace. However, the bay son of Scotch Broom had to be shaken up in the final stages to retain a margin of a length and a half at the end. Cornelia Powell, an odds-on favorite in the betting, cantered to a hollow victory in the fourth event of the day, a six and a half furlongs contest, which she captured by ten lengths, while Texas Maid, the runner-up, had a like margin over Little Mistake. Cornelia Powell was hemmed in soon after the start but lost no time in extricating herself and rapidly forged into the lead, which she increased considerably as the race progressed, and was merely romping through the stretch, indicating that her advantage could have been even larger had her rider elected to ride her out. Easy Bid fell during the first sixteenth. Jockey A. Gaither escaped with a slight shaking up and, after cancelling his engagement in the fifth race, resumed riding again in the sixth.
