POPULAR SAMMY WILLIAMS TO RIDE AT FAIR GROUNDS j NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. 21. Sammy Williams, capable young apprentice rider under contract to J. C. Ellis, will be here to resume his quest of National jockey honors. The eighteen-year-old Dublin, Texas, youth, Is pressing Johnny Longden for first place in the standings now, and since his services always are much in demand, he may be able to work his way to the front before the end of the year. Williams holds his position in the standing in spite of having been inactive almost three and a half months during the year. He suffered a broken jaw and collarbone in a spill at Oaklawn Park last spring and sustained a broken arm in a fall at Thistle Down. The young Texan rode his first winner at Tropical Park last December and then was pacing the apprentices at Hialeah Park before the Ellis stable was transferred to Hot Springs. After recovering from injuries received at the Vapor City, Williams led the riders at the spring meeting at River Downs, Detroit and Thistle Down and was only beaten narrowly for top honors by Ronald Nash during the Detroit fall season.
