LASSIE STAKES FOR SATURDAY Marchbank Enthusiastic Over California-Bred Fixture. Blue Breeze Likely Favorite in Good Fiald of Misses Dear Diary Not Nominated. SAN BRUNO, Calif., Nov. 21. One of Tan-forans most important races, the California-bred Lassie Stakes, for two-year-old fillies, will have its fourth running next Saturday and a small, but good field is expected to perform While the San Francisco Handicap is the stellar offering of the meeting from the public viewpoint, the Lassie is the highlight of the session in the estimation of John W. Marchbank, owner of the track. Marchbank, one of the most prominent of California breeders, is highly enthusiastic over the Lassie, which he once won with Maid of Perth. He has two fillies entered this season, namely Lady Heather and Nod-die, but his colors coming down in front makes but little difference to the "Squire of Walnut Creek." His chief aim is to have the youngsters put up a good fight in the Lassie and have the event glorify the California breeding industry. Blue Breeze, owned by Janss Bros., who maintain a large breeding establishment in the southern part of the state, looms as the likely favorite in the Lassie. She was rested during the summer and has started twice since her return, finishing unplaced in her first start and second next time out. Ex-jockey Grayson Philpot trains Blue Breeze. Owner Neil McCarthy is probably kicking himself that he did not name his crack miss, Dear Diary, for the Lassie. This daughter of Tick On simply "aired" to a good field Friday. Dear Diary ran three-quarters in 1:114,5 and won by three lengths. She would have had the Lassie Stakes at her mercy. Henry Potter Russell, member of the Cali- Continued on fourteenth page. The latter raced poorly in her only appearance, but Temperament turned in a good effort recently and must be rated as a contender. Other probable starters in the Lassie are C. E. Coopers Lovely Bells, Mrs. W. H. Cutlers Bellzetta, Wm. Le Barons Green Jade, D. J. Metzgers Miss Loan, as well as Brush Fire, Xentor, Francoise and a couple of others. Bon Homme, Bistouri and Wildair are each represented in the Lassie by three fillies. Other prominent sires whose progeny will try for the honors are Gallant Sir, Blue Larkspur, Plucky Play, King Heather, Tick On, War Cry and Alexander Pantages. Tanforan, to date, has been favored with excellent weather for its autumn session. Every day has been perfect. Bright sunshine, no wind and the thermometer registering in the sixties. Still the pari-mutuel handle is far below that of Bay Meadows. During the first four days the handle went over 00,000 but once, whereas the Meadows did not have a day under that figure. The free pass situation and the automobile parking charges may account for the smaller handle, as Annie Oakleys are very scarce at Tanforan and a parking fee is levied. At the Meadows passes were numerous and motorists got a "free roll" for their cars. The track will be dark Monday, but entries for Tuesday -will be taken on that day.
