FAIR GROUNDS PLANS BRILLIANT OPENING CARD Thanksgiving Handicap Supported By Other Races Above Average Fifteen Starters Probable in First Feature of Lon ftfinter Meeting at New Orleans Track Which Begins Thursday Afternoon NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. 22. While the sixteenth running of the Thanksgiving Handicap will be the principal offering on Thursdays inaugural program at the Fair Grounds, and prospects for a brilliant renewal of that fixture are good, the supporting events on that card should be no less interesting and should do their share to make the opening a big success. T-he principal supporting race will be the Carrollton Purse, a condition race at six furlongs, designed to engage the better grade two-year-olds. There are plenty of useful juveniles on the scene, and a capacity field of twelve is virtually assured for its running. Besides the handicap and the contest for two-year-olds, there are several events for uuiaco Huiwi juol iciu ziiy kjl utuug ui stake caliber, one of these being for sprinters, and the other will see the better grade platers meeting at a mile and a sixteenth. The prospective field for the Thanksgiving Handicap, which is to be decided over a mile and seventy yards for an added purse of ,000, looms more promising than ever, and it is not unlikely that as many as fifteen will parade to the post for it. Horses are arriving here daily and hardly a shipment arrives that doesnt include a performer of handicap quality. CARVOLA FIT AND READY. Carvola, which races for E. K. Bryson, signalized her fitness for Thursdays engagement in a recent workout in which she ran a mile in 1:42 in a most impressive fashion. j This daughter of Carlaris, a member of one of the most powerful establishments on the grounds, is known to fancy the Fair Grounds track and her latest training move leaves little doubt as to her present condition. Among the latest Thanksgiving Handicap candidates to arrive on the scene is James Emerys Taken, which came in from Narragansett Park, while some of those which have been here several days are T. J. Hills White Cockade, Jouett Stouses Joanny, Mose Goldblatts Dnieper, R. A. Cowards Waxwing and Upslala, Mrs. Sam Orrs Orinoco, W. W. Adams Warlaine, Mrs. E. H. Bartletts Zevson, C. E. Davisons Chance Ray, Mrs. V. Wyses Eastport, and Mrs. A. M. Creechs Gato and Shining Heels. In recent training moves Dnieper rattled off seven furlongs in 1:33. Eastport breezed three-quarters in 1:22, Zevson covered a similar distance in 1:20 and Joanny traveled five-eighths in 1:03. SATURDAYS CHD3F OFFERING. While the route running handicap horses have their chance in the Thanksgiving Handicap, the better sprinters get their chance two days after in the Dixie Handicap, a dash of six furlongs for horses of all ages, which is down for decision Saturday. This race carries a ,000 purse and it too should bring out a representative field. The week-end program also embraces a diversified assortment of races and should provide a keen brand of sport. Nominations for the Dixie close Thursday, with weights to be announced the following day. Meanwhile the plant is in ship-shape order for Thursdays opening, which officials of the Louisiana Jockey Club are confident will be one of the biggest in years.
