Review of New York Racing Total Distribution Passes ,000,000 Mark for First Time in Many Years El Chico and Porters Mite Top Money-Winning Korses Long-den Has Big Year in Saddle New York went over the top in 1938 in a racing way when the money total distributed passed ,000,000 for the first time in many years. The ,005,765 given away by the 1 combined racing associations of the Empire State was 52,915 more than was distributed in 1933, just six years ago, . and illustrates in forceful fashion the long strides toward ; complete recovery made by the metropolitan district and Saratoga. Saratoga, the upstate 1 Spa, which is first in the affection of all American horsemen because of its aura of horseflesh, its annual meeting and its -yearling sales, was the leading money giver for one meeting, but it was surpassed as a distributor of largesse by Belmont Park when the summer and fall sessions of the big Nassau county track are combined. The best racing in this country is staged in New York. There is no contradiction to that. The best horses, the best riders and a long list of old and famous stakes hold the interest of race fans in the big town. Other sections may have their day in the sun, but New York recaptures the spotlight without an effort once the nine-day wonder has passed. Since 1933 the total of money prizes has risen steadily. The biggest single jump occurred between 1933 .and 1934, and for the following years it increased at the rate of approximately 00,000 annually, until this year it just passed ,000,000. Belmont Parks daily average was the highest, horsemen splitting 5,123.31 between them daily. The percentage of winning favorites was creditable, .39 racing home in front. William Ziegler, Jr., was the most fortunate owner, his horses winning thirteen races and 13,710. W. E. Boeing, owner of Porters Mite, topped the Belair Stud of William Woodward, 7,710 to 4,655. Close behind them came the Wheatley Stable, 0,960; Mrs. E. D. Jacobs, 8,730; Milky Way Farm, 5,205; Maxwell Howard, 5,040; Thomas Hitchcock, 3,400, and G. D. Widener, 2,190. El Chico, owned by William Ziegler, Jr., as is Esposa, was the leading money-winning horse and finished the year unbeaten. He won six races in New York, all of them leading juvenile stakes. His New York total was 8,150. He was not eligible for the Belmont Futurity, which fell to Porters Mite, giving that western-owned volt 2,375 and second place, and his owner, W. E; Boeing, his high standing among the money-winning owners. New York just missed staging the race of the year when War Admiral and Seabiscuit were scheduled to settle their feud on Decoration Day at Belmont Park, the cancelation of which raised a storm of criticism which lasted until the two stars finally met later in the year at Pimlico. War Admiral scored some of his outstanding victories, on New York tracks and finished fourth behind Pasteurized as a money gleaner on Empire State tracks with 9,675. The Chief, Esposa, Snark, Dinner Date, Thanksgiving, Fighting Fox, Magic Hour, Handcuff and Donita M. figured prominently during the season and made worthwhile records. Hirsch Jacobs, the perennial, was once more the leading trainer, saddling seventy-four winners. Jim Fitzsimmons sent out fifty-one winning horses, and E. L. Snyder, thirty-seven. . Johnny Longden had a big year in New York. He rode 128 winners, nearly double , the seventy-two credited to Eddie Arcaro, his closest pursuer in the racing for riding honors. J. Stout and Wayne Wright tied for third place with sixty winners each.
