LESSER LIGHTS AMONG STARS Kayak II., Comet JX, The Chief and Sceneshifter Play Second Fiddle to Champion Performers. ARCADIA, Calif., Dec. 2 Stablemates of champion thoroughbreds oft-times do not receive the recognition that they deserve. Take Kayak II., which Charles S. Howard has under the same barn roof with Seabiscuit, as a shining example. This three-year-old brown colt by Congreve Mosquita, an invader from the Argentine, has won five races four of them in a row and been second twice in seven starts in the East and little has been heard of him. But Kayak II. is going to be named for the 00,000 added Santa Anita Handicap and may turn out to be quite a contender. Ligaroti gets most of the limelight for Bing Crosby and Lin Howard when they start buzzing about the big race, but they have another Argentine galloper three-year-old CometIL that many experts tab as a serious threat for the honors. Sensational Stagehand has completely overshadowed The Chief and Sceneshifter in Col. Maxwell Howards stable. The Chief, since leaving Santa Anita, has won the Brooklyn and the Dwyer Stakes and has been in the thick of many racing battles. Sceneshifter, which won two races here last winter, was running head and head with Stagehand in the Santa Anita Handicap and might have won it if a bad tendon had not started to hurt him just as he was making his run in the stretch. Sceneshifter has been on the shelf since then, but is traiinng again and must be considered with Stagehand, his brother. Porters Mite is naturally getting most of the attention and consideration for the 0,-000 added Santa Anita Derby in the William E. Boeing barn, but they have a big Ques-itonnaire colt, Chief Gamble, which the John Hay Whitney establishment considered a better prospect. Chief Gamble has been a winner and may come along to beat out Porters Mite. War Minstrel gets the hurrahs for Mrs. Emil Denemark on the strength of beating both Seabiscuit and War Admiral this past season, but there are a half dozen stable-mates whose performances in stakes and handicaps entitles them to a tumble.
