! AGUA CALIENTE TURF NOTES o H. E. "Doc" Davis has been appointed trainer of the horses representing Rancho Prospecto Stable. Davis relieves C. Cook, who directed the conditioning of Wise Ace, Hand Tree, All Ele and Doris Ele, and checked in Friday morning with the four-year-old Smart Girl. The receiving barn is becoming more popular here. There were a few disgruntled horsemen when it was first instituted. It was one of the innovations of presiding steward George W. Schilling. Former jockey Harry Howard arrived with the horse Lee Hastings, which he will campaign here during the winter months. There has been an adjustment to the claiming rule here. Judge Schilling has arranged to have claims filed by 1 oclock. Heretofore the horsemen filed them fifteen minutes before the race. W. A. Philpot, father of Grayson and Hirst Philpot, both among the successful younger trainers, is an arrival with the horse Balkan Land, which was recently purchased from W. E. Boeing. Jockey Norman Frasch joined the riding colony Friday and will probably don the colors soon. Frasch is affiliated with the stable in charge of his brother, H. Frasch. Peter Russell, a popular performer in this region which races for Mrs. H. Weber, was unloaded Friday morning and will probably engage in some of the events this week-end. In order to protect the horsemen, judge George W. Schilling has arranged to have two smears of saliva from every winner. This is done in the paddock before the public, or those interested in the procedure. One portion of the saliva is submitted to the laboratory in San Diego, while the other is held in escrow, to be presented in the event a controversy arises. Among other Agua Caliente arrivals during the interim since last Sunday were T. E. Cummings, with Simba Sue; H. E. Noren, with Race Craft and Magic Lad, which he races for himself, and Vera O. for E. Rot-man.
