U. S. INFANTRY STREAMLINED WASHINGTON, D. C, Dec. 2. The American army has streamlined the infantry regiment of the future, reducing its personnel by a third but increasing its firing power and smashing force fivefold, it was learned today from the War Department. The new regiment will be on wheels, will be armed with semi-automatic rifles which give virtually a shoulder machinegun to each doughboy, and will have six times as many heavy machineguns as the much larger World War regiment. Not only will its rifle and machine-gun fire power be increased tremendously, but the new regiment will have numerous mortars. The new streamlined unit, War Department officials said, is destined to fit into the speed-up tempo of the war and will be extremely mobile, moving entirely by high-speed motor trucks.
