1 CHARLES TOWN TURF NOTES f $ $ Clyde Ponce, who will race a useful string of horses in Florida during the winter months, is endeavoring to acquire the contract on the lightweight rider G. Witmer. He hopes to close the deal soon. Jockey Leon Garrett, who suffered a shaking up when thrown from the plater Kai-Min in the fifth race Thursday, was sufficiently recovered to ride Friday. Jockey C. Watters, who was thrown from Hair Trigger, also was back in the saddle. H. W. Jackson brought five horses from Bowie to race for the balance of the meeting here. J. F. Adams, Jr., shipped Feather Tread, Daisy Petal and Doctors Gift here from Pim-lico and they will remain for the remainder of the season. Jockey F. Vallee was suspended for a ten-day period for rough riding astride Tommy Rose in the sixth race on Thursday. His mount was disqualified after winning. Glen Horn and J. Shanks joined the local riding colony and both were seen in action Friday. Jockey S. Palumbo suffered an injury to his eye while riding on Thursday and cancelled his mounts Friday due to the swelling of the optic. Racing secretary Fred Burton stated that 256 entries were received for the opening program of the meeting, 285 for Fridays program and 270 for the card on Saturday. Jockey Ralph Eccard who was a visitor on opening day decided to leave for New Orleans and ride at the Fair Grounds. Jockey J. Convey who rode on the senior circuit in Canada during the summer months, joined the riding colony at Charles Town. It was with deep regret that horsemen in Maryland and West Virginia learned of the passing of the veteran trainer Gwynne R Tompkins, who died from injuries suffered from a fall. The late conditioner of thoroughbreds was in his seventy-seventh year, and for many years handled the horses of Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sl-an, Samuel D. Riddle, E. M. Weld and J. W. Colt, and was identified with racing for over thirty years. Henry Erickson has taken over the engagement book of jockey Johnny Shanks who will ride here for the balance of the meeting. James Kent, a brother of O. F. Kent who led the trainers list at Charles Town during the summer meeting, has applied to the West Virginia Racing Commission for a trainers license.
