ODOM JOINS MIAMI COLONY String Houses Marshall Field, Gerry and Stewart Horses. Elder Odom Has Record of Saddling Great Array of Outstanding Stake Winners list of Odom Horses. MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 21. Latest to join the long list of celebrated trainers on hand for the Hialeah meeting, January 11 to March 4, are George M. Odom and his son, George P. "Maje" Odom of New York. The Odom thoroughbreds arrived at Hialeah Tuesday, twenty-four strong, from Columbia,. South Carolina, in charge of foreman William McKnight. The Odom stable is regarded as one of the most fashionable in America, comprised of thoroughbreds belonging to Marshall Field of Chicago and Robert L. Gerry and Mrs. W. Plunket Stewart of New York. Field and Gerry are members of The Jockey Club. The elder Odom has saddled any number of winners in famous racing classics. Before taking up training activities Odom was one of the great riders of his day, and has to his credit many important turf triumphs astride equally-famous horses. He won the Champagne Stakes at Belmont with Kilmarnock in 1899 and Oiseau in 1904; the Tremont at Aqueduct in 1901 with Whiskey King; the Toboggan with Banastar at Belmont in 1901 and Hurst Park in 1904; the Dwyer at Aqueduct in 1902 with Major Daingerfield and the Lawrence Realization at Belmont the same year; the Great American with Broomstick at Aqueduct in 1903; the Champlain Handicap at Saratoga with Molly Brant in 1904, and the Belmont Stakes and Withers with Delhi in 1904. Other important scores were recorded at old Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach and Gravesend. Odom continued his success as a trainer. Peanuts, sire of Top Row, was?one of his good horses. This mighty little lightning bolt was the first to better 1:49 for. a mile and a furlong. This was in 1927 when he stepped the distance in 1:48 to win the Brooklyn Handicap. Odom handled Nimba, a great race mare; Stimulus and Purchase. Two Belmont Futurities also are to his credit, High Strung in 1928 and Tintagel in 1935. And this year, Odom continued his sweep of important events by accounting for the coveted Belmont Stakes with Mrs. Stewarts Pasteurized. Last season at Hialeah, Pasteurized ran third to Lawrin, destined Kentucky Derby winner, and Bourbon King. Pasteurized is a nominee for the 0,000 added Widener on March 4. Other candidates for this important stake are Marshall Fields Sir Damion and Cattistock. For the Flamingo Odom wilLhaye Pont Neuf and Cooling Spring, the former belonging to Field and the latter to Mrs. Stewart. The list of Odoms Hialeah winter campaigners follows: Sir Damion, four-year-old; Pasteurized, Milk Punch, Early Delivery and Cattistock, three-year-olds; Early Morn, Oklab, Cream Cheese, Slap Jack and Signal Flare, two-year-olds, and fourteen yearlings.
