SHOULDER ARMS FINISHES NECK BEFORE FLORAGIN A Lustig Colorbearer Mild Surprise in Homestead Purse at Tropical . Brilliant Riding of Eddie Arcaro Factor in Victory Defeat of Roar Days Principal Upset - Macmac and Absconder Triumph CORAL GABLES, Fla., Dec. 21. Shoulder Arms, speedy three-year-old of thelLongchamps establishment of Henry Lustig, provided a mild surprise in the five and a half furlongs Homestead Purse when he drove home in advance of seven rivals in the condition event which featured todays competition at Tropical Park. As the gelded son of Crack Brigade and Gloria Monk completed the distance in 1:06, he was a scant neck in advance of Floragina, with the latter earning a photograph decision over Joe Schenck for the place. Then came the heavily7 supported favorite, Hoar, which failed to run within pounds of his best form. The victory rounded out a double for the veteran Eddie Arcaro, who had taken an earlier sprint with Absconder. There ; was metropolitan support for the Lustig sprinter, and this sent him to the post at .20 to . The victory marked the second of Jus career and was due principally to the alertness and strong finishing power of his rider, for it is probable he would have been beaten with a r lesser rider up. The defeat of Roar was the days principal upset, with Absconder the other standout horse of the program re- warding the public in a hard-earned victory. As usual Shoulder Arms broke like a quarter horse to take command in the opening yards. Arcaro did not attempt to open UP on his company but steadied the Crack Brigade gelding on the front end. The New Yorker gained a clear lead going to. the far turn, and this he maintained until well in the stretch. In the stretch he had been driven out with whip, hand and heel, finishing a very tired horse. CLOSES IN DETERMINED FASHION. Floragina, a Virginia-bred daughter of" Gino, was right there all the way and closed in determined fashion under hard urging to outlast Joe Schenck. The latter was shy on early speed, but came through on the inside with a nice flash of speed to pick up third money. Roar never could get to the winner, despite persistent urging from Connell and put in a sour effort. Candle Ends, close up early, tired in the last quarter. Bucking ran a poor race despite keen training trials. The six furlongs claiming race for two-year-olds, which was the days secondary attraction, was decided right at the start when Travel Agent beat the gate from his No. 12 station to gain a winning advantage before his rivals were able to settle in stride. This enabled him to stagger home a neck in advance of the public choice, Modern Age, a gelding which performed as if considerably the best. A head back of the latter Blacky Bee managed to outlast Boston Lad for third money. The successful son of General Lee and Day Court was well backed, being third choice at ?4.65 to . HARD REDDEN THROUGHOUT. Yarberry rode Travel Agent hard for the entire trip, first to turn back the challenge of Holiday Tea and then to withstand the bids of Star of Padula and Modern Age. His mount did not have an inch of bad luck after his advantageous getaway. The runner-up left the post slowly, but Wright whipped him through the bunch in the back-stretch run, coming around the leaders on the turn and then being forced wide at the top of the front lane. He would have been the winner with a trifle farther to go. Continued on fifteenth page. SHOULDER ARMS FINISHES NECK BEFORE FLORAGINA Continued from first page. Anglo Saxon, a lightly regai-ded outsider, closing with a rush on the outside, was up in the final yards of the six furlongs opener to take a neck decision from the pacemaking Sun Antioch, with Airlap a half length farther away. The Saxon Blue Grass Belle gelding always was in closest pursuit of the sore-going leader and outgamed him after losing several lengths at the turn for home. Sun Antioch outbroke his company and held sway under light urging until challenged in the stretch. Then he faltered under pressure. Airlap finished steadily. While Brannons effort suggested ttie dockers timed the wrong horse when they clocked him working six furlongs in better than 1:14. Never was he a factor. Addis, the public choice, could not run a lick. PEACHYPEE DISAPPOINTS. Peachypie, best fancied in the six furlongs of the second, a dash for juvenile non-winners, was the second straight favorite to put in a very sad effort The Blondin filly always was far back, with Miss Whim scampering along on the front end to carry the silks of H. M.cLeod to a four-length victory over Art Cooper. That Kentuckian out-gamed Dianapat for the margin. The triumphant daughter of Wise Counsellor and Queen Whims was second choice in the "tote." Ronnie Nash was atop Miss Whims and his task was an easy one. The Golden miss quickly opened upon her opposition and after the first quarter was not threatened. Art Cooper, always well up, showed more courage under punishment than Dianapat, this enabling him to take the place by a head. The latter filly was right there all the way. Istanbul finished .fairly well. Absconder gave Eddie Arcaro his third winner of the meeting by driving home three parts of a length in front of Chancer in the six furlongs claimer for middle-class platers, with the tiring Patsey Begone just a head farther away. The Maryland-bred son of Challenger II. and Elopement, was the initial choice of the afternoon to score. PATSEY BEGONE TIKES. B. F. Whitakers colorbearer was outpaced for the first half mile but moved up swiftly on the outside thereafter, finishing with much determination under a hard drive of hand and heel to be drawing away at the end- Chancer had the speed to be right in all the pace with Patsey Begone but hung in the last fifty yards. Patsey Begone had her usual early speed but was a tired mare upon the completion of five and a half furlongs. Macmac gave the British, stallion, Challenger IX, which, now stands in Maryland, his second winner of the meeting when he earned a neck decision over Fly Me in the mile and sixty yards claimer which preceded the main attraction. The latter was just a head iri advance of Woodwaac at the final post, with Virginia Boy a head farther away. There was smart .support for the Crescent Stable representative, as he showed a shade less than 5to 1 in the machine. ,
