Miss Dogwood Looms Choice for Oaks Shows Good Form In Mile Workout Goes Distance in 1 :45 2-5 For Downs Week-End Stake — Ten-Horse Field Probable LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5.— Miss Dogwood, a three-year-old filly by Bull Dog and the former worlds six-furlong record-holder, Myrtlewood, stands out as the probable favorite for Saturdays running of the Kentucky Oaks. This shifty miss, owned by Brownell Combs, received an easy mile trial during the training hours this morning, and her connections are satisfied that she will be at her best for Saturdays test of a mile and a sixteenth. Miss Dogwood was timed the eight furlongs in 1:49% and, though there was nothing sensational about the speed of this effort, she accomplished her task without being urged, and trainer John G. Goode expressed himself satisfied with the move. She went the opening quarter in :24, the half mile in :50V5 and three-quarters in 1:1825, breezing all the way. The Combs filly made her 1942 debut at Churchill Downs a week ago in the Colleens Purse, at six furlongs, and she won this engagement in convincing fashion. She took command soon after the break and held her rivals — all fillies — safe to the end. Behind her were several horses who are expected to oppose her in the Oaks Saturday. Among them were J. Kel Hous-sels Emolument, Woolford Farms Pig Tails and Double H Ranchs Fillibeg. Won Keenelands Special Event Miss Dogwood compiled an enviable record in a light campaign last year. She started seven times and won four races, including the Special Event at Keeneland, in which she defeated Petrify, widely hailed as the best two-year-old filly out last season. In two other smart performances in 1941 she finished second to Alsab in the Prairie State Stakes at Washington Park and was runner-up to Devil Diver in the Breeders Futurity at Keeneland. Emolument, Pig Tails, Fillibeg and several other Oaks candidates were under colors in the Rose of Sharon Purse this afternoon, and if they are to be sent after Miss Dogwood this week-end probably will be determined by their owners and trainers tomorrow. Fifty-seven fillies are eligible for the stake, and about ten of them may be included in the starting field.
