Singing Wood, Futurity Hero, Stands at New Kentucky Home j I j | I j ! Whitney Leases Son of Royal4 Minstrel to Finley Brothers, Masters of Waland Farm GEORGETOWN, Ky., May 5.— The Belmont Futurity hero, Singing Wood, winner of 26,090, has a new home. It is at nearby Waland Farm, owned by Jake and Lewis Finley, who leased the son of Royal Minstrel from John Hay Whitney. The Finley brothers have almost 20 matrons booked to Singing Wood. At Mares Nest, the Whitney nursery, Singing Wood did not have much opportunity, because at stud there is another Royal Minstrel horse, Mr. Bones, as well as The Porter. Here the bay horse will have a better opportunity, there being but one other thoroughbred stallion at stud in this county. Lewis Finley, in charge of the horse department of Waland Farm, is trying hard to "make" the bay horse as a sire. Singing Wood was a successful racer. As a juvenile he was the leading money winner iof 1933, with earnings of 8,050. In his racing debut he defeated Cavalcade and Discovery, and later in the season he won tht rich Futurity from Sir Thomas, High Glee, Hadagal and others. As a three-year-old he won the Withers Stakes beating Roustabout, Chicstraw and First Minstrel and the Queens County Handicap beating War Glory and Burgoo King . The Finley boys — both are in then-twenties — became .interested in horses in 1933 when a distant relative, Dr. Jim Car-rick, long a thoroughbred breeder, presented them the mares Electres and Mary, Peach. Their interest was minor until the last two years. Roster of Finley Mares Gradually they have acquired mares un- j til now the matron ranks of Waland have ! grown to eight. These mares are as follows: Dorita, brown 1929, by Dodge — Azurita, by Hession; has bay colt, by Unbreakable, booked to Unbreakable. June Bush, brown 1928, by Chilhowee — Alfadir, by Solitaire II.; barren, boked to Singing Wood. Ma Metz, bay 1936, by Infinite — Noviana, J by Waygood ; barren, booked to Brevity. Conditional, chestnut 1928, by Pluribusl — Himera, by Goldcrest; has chestnut] filly, by Heather Broom, booked to Carier Pigeon. Hi-Fine, black 1938, by Hi-Jack — Just Fine, by Ballot; in foal to Invermark, booked to Singing Wood. Electres, brown 1932, by Coventry — Rora, by Plaudit; has brown filly, by Mr. Bones, booked to Singing Wood. Sedalia, brown 1932, by Blondin— Bitsy Bee, by Bezant; barren, booked to Singing Wood. Marlec, bay 1939, by Mars — Electres, by Coventry; maiden, booked to Singing Wood. Seeking Better Matrons "I know," said Lewis Finley, "that we havent top mares. Were just getting started. We plan to acquire good mares, get rid of our bad ones — and some day we might be in the big time." Both Finley brothers are keenly interested in horses and they are ambitious. From Waland Farm this year will go two worthwhile yearlings to the sales. One is a bay colt, by Ariel — June Bush. The other is a chestnut colt, by Brilliant — Conditional. Dealers from Lexington have made offers for the Ariel colt, but the Finleys expect a better price for such a handsome son of Ariel. The Brilliant colt is a member of the last crop of his sire. Bright Willie, the highly-regarded three-year-old, is also a son of Brilliant. At Waland Farm last year the Finley brothers grew a tobacco crop which attained the highest Kentucky average of the 1941-42 sales season.
