— — * Boxthorn Sultan At Cone jo Ranch Proven Sire Serves Majority Of Mares — Shining One Has Chance to Prove Potency CAMARILLO, Calif., May 5.— The reliable ten-year-old Boxthorn, one of the four Blue Larkspur stallions standing in California, and the six-year-old Shining One, lone son of the imported sire Twink, at stud in the state, will serve the mares on the Cone jo Ranch of Ed and William Janss this season. The proved Boxthorn will cover the majority, but Shining One, winner of the Hollywood Derby, will be given his chance with several home mares as well as a few from outside. The mares slated to go to Boxthorn are Sabina H., by Traumer — Sun Sabre, by Sun Briar; First Kiss, by Osculator — Nellie Worthington, by Glencairn; Beedle Boodle, a daughter of Sunshot — Cap tress, by Chat-terton; Tetrarchs Captive, by The Tet-rarch; Source Circle, by Sun Circle — Source, by Ali Bey; All Forlorn, a daughter of Menifee, and Helen King, by Pandion — Manon, by Sain. Additional mares barren last year but bred to Boxthorn this season are the Sun Briar mare Sun Chen, dam of the good handicap runner Conejo, Blow Out, by Blue Pete — Conine, by Lemberg, and Easy Come, by Prince Pal — No Regrets, by Eternal. Blow Out is the dam of Winter Wind, a recent winner in the East. Shining Ones First Season Shining One, making his first season at stud, will cover among others Black Mistress, by Westy Hogan — Candy Queen, by Stefan the Great; Princess Margaret, by Spanish Prince II. — Long Ago, by Previous, and Brigade B., by Crack Brigade — Virginia B., by Friar Rock. One dozen foals will be on hand when all the mares bred last season have produced. Boxthorn is the sire of a bay filly, out of Sabina H.; brown colt, out of First Kiss, and a colt, out of Pnncess Margaret. Others are a brown filly, by Sweep Ali — Black Mistress; filly, by the South American sire Cascabelito, out of Beedle Boodle; filly, by Soon Over — Captress, and a colt, by Baltimore Boy or Special Agent, out of Source Circle. Red Cap, a California-bred son of Rip Rap and a stake winner under the silks of Circle M Ranch, has a foal coming out of Brigade B., while All Forlorn is in foal to Fire thorn, Helen King to Swift and Sure, Gold Arms to Head Play and Gay Louise to Boxthorn. The Janss Brothers have reduced their stock, particularly the mares, since the first of the year, but still retain enough horses to keep them among Californias leading breeders. Aside from the sires, mares and foals they have four yearling colts and two yearling fillies by Boxthorn, one yearling filly by Naishapur and five two-year-olds on the ranch.
