Painted Veil Scores Again at Jamaica Takes Maud Muller Handicap In Colors of Louis B. Mayer Daughter of Blue Larkspur * Downs Pacemaking Pomayya After Brief Stretch Duel NEW YORK, N. Y., May 5.— Painted Veil, the half sister to Mate who races for Louis B. Mayer, again proved herself at Jamaica today when she was an easy winner of the Maud Muller Handicap, a test of a mile and a sixteenth that was confined to the fillies and mares. Confidently ridden by Jackie Westrope, she took the measure of the Brookmeade Stables Pomayya, who was attempting to give her two pounds, and far back of these Loveday was along to beat Equitable for j third. The only other starter was Yarrow Maid, a stablemate to Pomayya. This was the feature offering of an interesting card. The weather conditions could not have been improved upon and the sport was marked by many thrilling finishes that kept a crowd of 15,267 well entertained all afternoon. In the Maud Muller, when the five engaged left on the same stride, Alfred Rob-i ertson at once went out to show the way with Pomayya and at the first turn her stablemate, Yarrow Maid, was in second place, with Painted Veil well before Equitable, and Loveday brought up the rear. But as soon as Painted Veil was swinging along in full stride Westrope took a snug hold of her head and made no effort to go after Pomayya. The result was that the Pompey miss was soon three lengths clear and Robbie had a nice hold of her head. Winner Well Engaged Before the turn from the back stretch was reached Basil James called on Yarrow Maid in an effort to have her go to Painted Veil, but it was of no avail, and the daughter of Cavalcade was soon throwing her tail and dropping back badly. Pomayya still held to her lead around the bend, but at the head of the stretch Painted Veil cut down her lead and was closing steadily. A furlong out Robertson went to the whip and" while Pomayya responded gamely Painted Veil closed irresistibly and Westrope rode with supreme confidence when, though the score was an easy one, it was only by half a length. Pomayya was six lengths before Loveday, who outfinished the other two fillies. Painted Veil is engaged in the Metropolitan, the Suburban and the Top Flight Handicaps at Belmont Park.
