Closing j spectacularly from last place, and looping the entire field, Warren Wrights Sun Again, leading pretender to the 1944 hand- j icap crown, registered a smashing victory in the fourth running of the 0,000 Equi-poise Mile before a shrilling attendance of some 20,000 at Washington Park this after- , noon. The stalwart red son of Sun Teddy J carried top weight of 127 pounds in this Arlington fixture, including jockey- Conn , McCreary, and drove resolutely down the outside of his eight rivals through the long . homestretch, finally winning by three parts of a length at the direct expense of Allen ; Drumhellers Georgie Drum. That erst- , while plater, an invader from the West Coast, himself ran in highly creditable . fashion to be second, a neck before Hal ; Price Headleys leg-weary Anticlimax, who finished third. Daily Trouble was a thor- : oughly spent fourth. The Calumet entry of Sun Again and Mar-Kell paraded post- ward stanch favorites and returned .40, , while the victor added ,350 to his bank account. The racing surface was extremely fast , and Sun Again was clocked in 1:36 Vs, time , three-fifths off the course record. Earlier in the afternoon, the crowd saw the unpretentious Three Dots equal Romans 1:10 track standard for six furlongs in the Pom-pey Purse. Weather conditions were ideal for the presentation of the ambitious Saturday card and the largest, most enthusiastic gathering so far in the Arlington-Washington meet attended. Wagering was brisk throughout the afternoon as several solidly backed choices won. Wright Receives Whitney Cup Following the decision of the stake, Warren Wright, owner and breeder of Sun Again, appeared in the winners enclosure and received the C. V. Whitney challenge cup, commemorating this success, from Ben Lindheimer. There was little crowding during the course of the Equipoise although Sun Again was in fairly close quarters and taken back to last place at the break, with Woolf also taking Georgie Drum back, obviously to move with the favorite. Speeding to the first turn, Fire Dust showed s-ghtly in advance of Rounders, Daily Trouble, Anticlimax and Mar-Kell, who had him pretty well surrounded. He ran out of speed on the turn, where Anticimax moved to the front, disposed of Rounders and Mar-Kell and was jousting head and head with Double Trouble entering the stretch. While the field raced into the bend, Sun Again and Georgie Drum inaugurated their run together, the former taking the overland and the latter weaving between beaten horses. They shot by Anticlimax and Daily Trouble at the eighth pole, with Sun Again outfinishing his stoutest rival for the main award, while Anticlimax finally outstayed Daily Trouble for third. Seven of the better fillies and mares provided plenty of action in the six furlongs of the Misty Isle Handicap, which resulted formfully when A. Skoronski booted the topweighted Roman Sox to the finish three parts of a length in advance of Gold Princess. A length and a half away Just for Fun was third. The Brolite Farm filly broke right after Creepin, assumed command on the turn and repelled Gold Princess stretch run, conceding this ad- Continued on Page Twenty-Four Sun Agains Sensational Final Rush Nets Victory Cdmes From Last Place to" Gain Popular Equipoise Mile Decision Continued from Page One versary six pounds. Traffic Court was a starter here but once again failed to exhibit the zip characterizing her May form. The winner paid .40 and hung but 1:11. Three Dots, a Good Advice gelding racing for J. H. Rouse and ridden by apprentice S. Hall, dead-heated Romans six-furlong track record in breezing fashion in the Pompey Purse, as the third event was called. He romped to the stand six lengths in front of Sun Jesting, the runner-up, and was timed in 1:10, which attests the speed-conducive condition of the course, as well as Three Dots capacity. , Sun Jesting and Herald injected whatever aspect of contest the race contained, the former thrusting through "the eye of a needle" on the rail to nip Herald for the place award. The winner was the medium of extensive support, with Herald disappointing many as second choice. Three Dots paid .20. Jack Lowensteins Be Brief, a well named Brevity gelding, came creditably close to. another track record when he sprinted seven furlongs in 1:23 to account for the Kayak H, for grade D, performers. The mark is Bow to Mes 1:23. Be Brief was ridden by Freddie Smith, killed off Port Harmony in the run to and around the turn, then won by a length and a half. Clarkesville was outrun early and charged through between horses belatedly to beat out Sun Flower a neck for the place. The winner was widely anticipated, paying .
