No Monmouth Workouts Because of Sloppy Track Rumor Spiked That Next Weeks Opening Will Be Delayed Again MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 13. — Due to adverse weather conditions during the past 24 hours, there were no workouts recorded over the sloppy Monmouth Park track today. However, track superintendent Mullin and his crew will take advantage of the enforced lull to work on the racing strip in an effort to have it in top condition for the opening of the inaugural meeting on Wednesday, June 19. Spiking a rumor that the opening of the Monmouth meeting might again be delayed, General Manager Edward Brennan issued a bulletin today in which it was stated that the 28-day session positively would open on schedule. The huge grandstand will be almost 100 per cent completed for the opening. On the other hand, it will be approximately 10 days after the opening before the well-appointed clubhouse will be ready to accommodate patrons, Brennan said. In the meantime, mutuel manager Mort Mahony has announced that the wagering plant is in complete readiness. The total-isator which was in use during the 1945 meeting at Delaware has been installed and at the close of the latter meeting, parts of the new high-speed totalisator will be transferred to the local course. Incidentally, Monmouth Park will offer patrons the Daily Double form of wagering on the first and second races daily. Racing Secretary John P. Turner, Jr., has issued his book containing nominations to Monmouths fine array of rich stakes and most of the top flight members of the various thoroughbred divisions have been entered for the various specials. Because of the postponement of the opening from June 10 to June 19, the 0,000 Oceanport Handicap and the 0,000 Long Branch Handicap, have been withdrawn from the book. These events were scheduled for June 10 and June 15, respectively. Instead, the 0,000 Colleen Stakes, for two-year-old fillies at five and one-half furlongs will serve as the opening-day feature. A total of 105 nominations were received for the Colleen Stakes when entries closed on May 15. In withdrawing the Oceanport and Long Branch handicaps, racing secretary Turner will refund approximately ,100 in nomination fees.
