Somerset Scores With First Mount of Career at Detroit FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 13. — Novice riders performed in the first race, a six-furlong dash for cheaper platers and it was M. H. Van Bergs Whosaidit who secured a narrow verdict over Bona Dea in a close finish that saw E. D. Tal-berts Fannie Mac only a head away in the field of seven. The winner was handled by Richard Somerset, a 17-year-old Detroit boy who was riding his first race. Somerset is under contract to Van Berg and under the Detroit novice jockey rules he is permitted to ride 10 such winning races against fellow novices in "exhibition" races before being classified as ah apprentice. Whosaidit was timed in 1:16% over a track that was rapidly drying out from overnight rains to be rated "slow." The winner was overlooked oin the wagering and returned 2.60. Axelson had the most early speed of the band but was soon displaced in the lead by Snappy Verse who opened up a clear lead turning into the stretch. In front, Snappy Verse went slightly wide as his novice rider apparently became somewhat confused. Bona Dea moved up stoutly at the furlong pole and at this juncture Whosaidit also made her move on the outside. In a whipless duel to the finish Somerset urged his charge vigorously and was up in the final nod to nip Bona Dea right on the fire as Fannie Mac, also closing stoutly between horses, completed the close finish.
