Assault Assault Seeks Seeks Dixie Dixie Handicap Handicap Today; Today; Rockwood Rockwood Lou Lou Visits Visits Winners Winners Circle Circle Drives Home Neck Before Rush Act Mavigliano Mare Withstands Closing Rush of Favorite In Thriller at Sportsmans SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 8. — Rockwood Lou, racing for F. and R. Mavigliano and making her first start at the meeting, gave a worthy exhibition of gameness when she drove to a neck victory in the featured seven-furlong Rockwell Purse here today. Taking a short lead from Cherry Wine on the backstretch, the winner maintained a half-length advantage over the Happy Hour Farm representative into the stretch, then was able to turn back a stiff challenge from J. H. Miles* favored and fast-finishing Rush Act, at the end. Anthony Ferreras Wow surged through the stretch quickly, after racing sluggishly in the early stages, to be another half-length away and only a head before the stubborn Cherry Wine. Jockey Artos L. Fay sent the winner over the distance in the passable time of 1 :32% to earn a 9.20 mutuel. Woodview Stables Steel Chain, racing forwardly and on the outside, clear of interference, apparently crossed his legs while on the far turn and fell. First Clear Day of Meeting While the patrons were treated to the first clear day of the meeting, there was a chill in the air as 10,935 turned out for the sport. Felix Randos Camps First was a trifle fractious at the starting gate, but when the field was dispatched he had speed to take a clear lead before Cherry wine. This order of the leaders was soon reversed as Camps First gave way and wilted out of contention. Rockwood Lou raced in third place and, when straight on the backstretch, moved into a short lead as Cherry Wine, on the outside, held on stubbornly. In this order, the leaders swung around the far turn and here they were joined by Rush Act and Wow. Closely aligned, the first four moved into the stretch and the resultant duel found Fay compelled to ask his charge for her best to retain her margin to the end. Thorobelle, racing for Mr. and Mrs. I. Seybold, drove to a hard-earned victory in the Lyons Purse that was best of the supporting races. Steadied closest to the pace of the favored Bentbrook, from the stable of W. T. Beezley, the winner was able to drive through on the inside on the final turn as Bentbrook raced off the rail. Taking command when straight in the stretch, the winner withstood a long stretch challenge from Bentbrook and inched to a neck advantage at the end of the five-furlong test. B. M. Smiths Cooling Spring finished with a rush from a slow beginning to be third, slightly more than a length farther back.
