Floating Isle Annexes Appleton Steeplechase Coasts to Finish Seven Lengths Before Deanslaw at Belmont Park BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 15. — After finishing second in the two preceding runnings of the Charles L. Appleton Steeplechase, Thomas T. Motts Floating Isle found perseverance rewarded when he coasted to victory in the twenty-sixth running of the stake today, leading Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Deanslaw by seven lengths at the end of the about two miles. Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Great Flare was less than a length behind in third place and 20 lengths before Sanford Stud Farms Fair Crystal. CM. Klines Pursuit Plane came in some time later, while Mrs Clarks Hidalgo fell at the seventh fence. The race was robbed of considerable interest when Mrs. Clarks Boojum II. and Miss Ella Wideners Iron Shot were withdrawn. Incidentally, the scratching of Boojum TJ. altered the couplings in the race, as J. E. Ryan trains both Boojum II. and Deanslaw, while Dolly Byers trains Mrs. Clarks other two candidates and the withdrawal of Boojum TJ. permitted Deanslaw to run alone, if you follow this. The winner, who was ridden by Frank D. Adams, was a firm choice and paid .30. There were international aspects to Floating Isles victory, as the gelding is a son of Battleship, the only American-bred horse to win the Liverpool Grand National, and his rider finished seventh on his mothers Refugio in that race this spring. Jockey James King, who fell from Hidalgo, was taken from the track in the ambulance suffering injuries to his right hip, but objected to being hospitalized. However, he was taken to Physicians Hospital in Jackson Heights over his protests.
