Boerner, Chase Rider, Dies When Struck in Head by Ball BALTIMORE, Md., May 15.— Kenneth Boerner, a 17-year-old youth who was prominent in Maryland steeplechase circles, died almost instantly yesterday when he was struck by a soft ball during a practice session at Hempstead High School, Carroll County, where he was a student. According to coach Frank W. Mather, Jr., Boerner, who was at bat, was hit in the back of the head by a wild pitch. The youth stood shaking his head for about 30 seconds, then fell. He died a few moments after the arrival of a doctor who resides across the street from the school. Boerner was believed to have died from a brain hemorrhage. Boerner was described by his coach as an all-around student and all-around athlete. He learned to ride just two years ago and just last month, in the My Ladys Manor Steeplechase at Monkton, Boerners mount, Foxhill, duelled with Stuart S. Jan-neys great jumper, Winton, before falling at the next-to-last jump.
