Assault Assault and and Stymie Stymie Suburban Suburban Foes; Foes; Star Star Reward Reward in in Peabody Peabody Memorial Memorial Nine Seek Honors In Alger Handicap Kingarvie and Sir Sprite Equally Topweighted Under 116 for Detroit Main Event FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 29. A crack field of nine has been named for the Col. Alger Memorial Handicap, 0,000 mile and a sixteenth test that tops the holiday program here tomorrow as han-dicapper Charles F. Henry holds the two highweights in equal regard under 116 pounds. These are R. S. McLaughlins fleet front runner Kingarvie and O. F. Woodwards fast finishing Sir Sprite, and these opposite performing hard hitters can expect stout opposition from Theodore F. Buhls improved Sweep Swinger who is next in the matter of weights under 114 pounds. Three-year-olds go in the principal supporting race when a half dozen of that age are matched in the six-furlong ,000 Decoration Day handicap. Won King Edward Gold Cup Kingarvie is fresh from a victory in the King Edward Gold Cup at Woodbine Park, Toronto, in which he carried successfully 124 pounds over the Alger distance. The son of Teddy Wrack climaxed his Florida campaign with a very convincing score in the Hallandale Handicap at Gulfstream Park. Previously, he had startled work watchers by setting a sizzling pace in the Gulfstream Park Handicap won by Armed in new track record time. Kingarvie flashed over the first six furlongs of that race in 1:09 and the mile was covered in 1:34. On the strength of this record, the Canadian-owned speedster may rule favorite in the Alger. Sir Sprite followed his first race of the season a Churchill Downs by a smashing effort in the Man o War Handicap over this course on opening day of the meeting a week ago. In this test Sir Sprite missed a head decision to Sweep Swinger while carrying 116 pounds and he may have been best as he was compelled to lose some ground entering Continued on Page Six Kingarvie and Sir Sprite Match Strides in Alger Sweep Swinger Also Among Nine Seeking Detroit Holiday Event Continued from Page One the stretch while the winner secured room on the inside to save ground. Sweep Swinger picks up four pounds over his Man o War impost and this shift in weights might be a deciding factor in the result. Prior to his Detroit success Sweep Swinger accounted for two consecutive allowance races at Churchill Downs and is obviously right on edge at present. While the above named trio will bear the bulk of the public attention, others in the Alger rate serious consideration. P. R. and H. L. Hintons Boy-Plin was fourth in the Man o War but may have needed that race to perfect his condition. He won four good aces last year. Milton Shagrins Darby Dim-out set the early pace in the Man o War when well fancied and might last longer here. The son of Flares was winner of seven races last year. Mrs. E. H. Beezleys Favorite finished a respectable fourth in the six furlongs Boots and Saddle Handicap a week, ago and this invader from the West Coast appears to be improving, too, but a score here would come in the nature of a surprise. Kingarvie will have Santa Claus as a running mate and this son of Balladier compiled a fairly consistent record during his Florida campaign as a recommendation. In the Decoration Day Handicap, also, a R. S. McLaughlin representative is top weight as Imperator is asked to shoulder 116 pounds, an impost that appears justified on the excellent record of the Roman colt which includes a brilliant front-running triumph in the seven furlongs Bahamas Handicap at Hialeah Park. Closest in the matter of weights here is Johns Pride from the stable of J. A. Kinard, Jr., who will carry 114 pounds. This stout son of Mahmoud, who was the two-year-old champion of Detroit racing last year, has victories at Keeneland and New Orleans this year to recommend him. A New Orleans success was registered convincingly over a muddy track and there is every liklihood that the local strip will not be fast for this race. Others in the Decoration Day include Detroit Stables recent winner here Eva T. and J. F. Smiths Sistayr who was second the other day. These will be meeting T. D. Buhls hard-hitting Cleaned, and Markey and Bohns Wilmar. I
